Pipes for putting around

Im new to smoking a pipe. I started with a terrible no name pipe, you could taste the finish when it got hot and it over powered the tobacco I decided to pickup a Peterson churchwarden and absolutely love it.

Now I'm looking for a compact pipe with a smaller bowl for a quick smoke at work. Im also looking for a sitter that I can lay down easily while working around the house and shop.

Im not looking to break the bank with either option especially with the sitter I will break or lose that one i guarantee it

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look at the “Tankard” shape by Peterson for a sitter style pipe. I thoroughly enjoy mine.

I’ve heard of the Peterson Junior line being on the smaller side. No experience myself.

I’d just pack your pipe halfway or smoke the bowl through two or three sessions if you looking for a “quick smoke”. Pipes are not like cigars in that they taste foul if relit.

I like a billiard shape for when I'm on the go.

Probably won't be a "sitter" but you can find something to lean it up against... Or just do like me and let some ashes dump out.

I have some Peterson Juniors and they're fine, also look at Morgan Bones pipes - inexpensive, compact, even a poker if you need something to sit. Otherwise, old English estates can be pretty small pipes and good ones.

Get a corncob pipe or two.

I would recommend a Pete 304 or 306. Both can be had as system pipes, both can be set down, the 304 for shorter smokes, the 306 for a little longer...

This is what you need. The perfect little work pipe. Great for a shorter smoke. Very stable sitter. They sit flat on the bottom of the bowl. They don’t rock onto the stem. Good for clenching. I have two of the polished ones and they are nice little pipes. The natural finish would be a good option to save a little money. I would get the polished model if they have any in stock because MM isn’t making the polished anymore. Inexpensive enough to try one of each. I find the polished cobs are easier to clean up if my hands get dirty from working around the house.

the straight stem falcon fits the bill. If you don't mind a very small bowl the Tsuge Metal Blowfish is incredible. It's chamber is the same size and volume as the Japanese metal pipes called Kiseru. It handles multiple refills and smokes surprisingly well too.

Yup, cobs do better if rested a day or two after a day of smoking to dry out. Having two or three or more helps depending on how much and often you smoke.

Great point. Some of those mini cobs have very narrow and/or shallow chambers.

The Morgan model has a 0.75"x1" chamber. That allows for about an hour of flavorful smoking with many blends.

Good question! I am specifically referring to bowl size here, and in particular I am thinking of the Missouri Meerschaum “Short Stop” when I say “too small”. I only represent myself here, but I find that bowl to be only useful for tasting, it is just too narrow and short. Also, don’t shy away from experimentation with very small bowls, they have their purpose as well! But for everyday use, I would recommend a Morgan as @ThermionicScott stated above. I think as long as you keep the bowl relatively wide (.68”-.75”+) you should be good to go.

I like my Morgan Bones nosewarmer I bought from a forum member for puttering around. No fancy finish or anything to worry about messing up if you drop it or bump it when puttering around.
