The next bowl around here is going to be My Mixture 965, which is one of those eternal classics that I hope never goes away.
Unless someone saves Dunhill, it will be.

It's funny how some denounce aros, when their sales are one of the biggest reasons that pipe smoking is still around.
I'm not denouncing aros, just ones like Captain Black.
I'm predominantly an English smoker, but I have found a few aros I enjoy occasionally. I've also found a few aros that taste like goopy chemical baths.
I can't deny that Captain Black has probably kept pipe smoking alive. Hell, it's the first blend I ever bought. It's also probably why a lot of people stop pipe smoking too. With me I bought a pouch and suffered through it, and told myself there has to be better stuff out there. If not, I'm not pursuing pipe smoking any further. I went to my local tobacco outlet, asked the guy working about pipe tobacco, and bought 2 ounces of what I later found out was Sutliff Whiskey and thought it was fairly good.
There is nothing wrong with aros, but I think some taste awful.
To each, their own.

That's why it's best to start with English and non aro blends. Aros are best enjoyed much later in the journey.

This is important advice, and possibly should be spread around as much as possible in order to retain new pipe smokers who might otherwise give up because of difficulties.

I bet the reason why aromatics get picked as a starting point for newbies is because they are most often found in bulk canisters on the pipe shop counter. The pipe shop can't just let guys start opening tins to smell them to see if they'd like them, like they do canisters. It's easier for a pipe shop owner to just say, pick one out from the jars.

Besides, it's the aromas of all of those apricot, vanilla, and peachy tobaccos that used to draw in potential customers when the Tinderboxes were all found in malls. Wayward men waiting on wives to try on shoes were compelled by the manliness of these aromas, and the eye candy of new pipes, chess sets, globes, canes, and men stuff in general.

Today, guys just follow the same advice. "I started with a Tinderbox bulk apricot, so you should start with the same."
But, then there's the 90% of all pipe smokers smoking these aromatics out there in the world. Maybe aromatic tobaccos just compel men to avoid forums. :puffy: Why do aromatic smokers hate us? :puffy:

I know the comment was meant in jest, but the main reason that we don't see many of the die-hard, everyday aro smokers here is that they don't even know the forums exist. A lot of them don't view pipe smoking as a hobby or pastime. It's just something they do.

Yeh, in hanging out and talking to folks at The Briary, I have asked guys buying aromatics about joining us on the forum, and they usually just say they would have nothing to talk about. I guess once you've found your one favorite tobacco that meets you needs as you watch TV, there's nothing more to say.

Maybe it could be said that non-aromatic guys are dissatisfied, always looking, and chatty. :puffy:

I started smoking a pipe when I was 17, and took a couple of decades to get to the point that I could smoke aros. I didn't even know there was an online world of tobacco to buy, or forums for such until 2012, as I only use the internet primarily for YouTube and Wikipedia when I need more info on something, and Amazon when I want to buy something. I came across this forum completely on accident when looking for different ways to remove oxidation on a stem. Folks who started smoking a pipe than an older age that I did, from the pre internet era, likely think nothing more about smoking a pipe other than it's just a means of tobacco consumption, and really don't put anymore thought into it.

I think this is why strict aromatic smokers usually come here, bitch at us for not having more conversations that they can participate in, and then leave. I always suggest that they start topics, but they never really have much to say. Some do stay and venture out, and that is great too.

My knuckles don't pop like they used to. Of course, nothing works like it used to. 8O
I found the forum by accident, after a friend on another hobby forum picked up a pipe. The rest is history. :D I didn't even know about stem oxidation. I thought the brown stem on my Soren freestyle was supposed to be that way. :puffy:

I'm going to rent a truck to transport as many pallets-really as much as I can buy-of The Grape to sell on eBay. In time I hope to become the leading national distributor. There's money in that tobacco! I can feel it.

Aromatic smokers, for many, "it's just something they do." I think that's it. It's not a hobby or interest, it's just one of life's pleasures. I've encountered a few such folks, and they take conversation about their pipe or tobacco as being a little too forward. Few show up on forums.
