Just can't imagine hoarding pipes, acquiring an encyclopedic knowledge of smoking, loading and tamping methods just to do it once and then never again. Very peculiar to me.
It's like any other sort of collection. I know mechanics that have restored classic cars just to keep as show pieces and I myself love Rubik's puzzles. I have hundreds of them but most were just bought to admire.

Fair enough. Whatever makes people happy really. I just tend to maximize use of everything I buy. Whether it's pipes, books, or whatever
