Petersons B10 Summer-time, 2018. It was a natural sandblast finish, beautiful and light.

Its now dark brown. This is not just skin-oil colouring as it is an even colour all over. It really accentuates the birdseye in the blast.

Its the pipe i smoke more than any other. My other natural blasts are colouring in a similiar way.
Hahaha now I know why you sold me the one with the thick black coating! Beauty bro

Thing is, most members have good number of pipes to actually get to the point of "patina". Also, most members clean their pipe often enough to encourage any build up. I do have natural finish pipes with changed color, but still shiny silver band and well polished finish. When I think of patina, I think of well used and care worn carbon steel pocket knife with change in steel to show patina on blade, and worn mark on the scale.

Interesting that guns popped up on this here thread thing. I can't think of many items that have patina as a valued attribute. Antique furniture, quality leather goods, copper cladding (like on the Statue of Liberty), pipes in my opinion, and guns in my opinion. They call it "honest holster wear" in the case of the latter. That's about it. I think patina, properly understood, is sexy, and really good specimens arouse a lust that I find difficult to control. Of course, I could be teetering on the edge of insanity--but who isn't? Example below, but not a particularly good one.

Carbon steel that gets honed and used stays pretty free from degradation. At least that true for my straight razors

I've always had a preference for natural pipes because of the way they color with age and handling with no stain or other finish to hide the beauty of the briar. Pictured below are 2 nearly identical pipes from Ed Burak's Connoisseur Pipe shop. One I bought from Ed circa 1981 and the other I just recently acquired as an unsmoked estate from Great Estate Pipes on Ebay that is still a virgin

Ray, I've had it a month or so, and probably only put 20-25 smokes through it.

Give it a year and it'll be virtually unrecognisable :)

Jason, that is taking on colour very quickly.
If only meerschaum would colour that fast, I'd be tempted to get a new one. However at my rate of smoking, there would be no chance one would get past the slightly off-white "dirty" stage ?

Great minds, and all that Ray! I’ve been having similar thoughts. As much as I’d love a new meer it’s just not going to happen.

We’ll just have to soldier on with the estates ?
