Hey all - I'm going to be traveling in a few days and I was wondering what the protocol was on Tobacco Pipes. Can I bring them on my carry on? Or do they need to be checked with my luggage? Does anyone have any advice for storage and so forth?
thanks for the help!

I've traveled with pipes in my carry-on with no problems. What I'm never sure of are the rules on lighters. When flying I usually leave my lighter at home and just buy matches when I get there.

Went on a bit of a TAD spree while visiting family a few weeks ago, I traveled with two pipes and about nine tins in a carryon.

Pipes and tobacco won't cause you a problem in your carry on, but some pipe tools might get their attention. Leave your lighter at home. I have a leather pipe bag that I just put inside my computer bag, but a small box with just about any kind of packing material should work fine. Have a safe trip... :puffy:

Just flew to afghanistan about two weeks ago. first carried my pipe, tobacco, czech tool all on my person. Secondly you can fly with a lighter(must be a disposable one no zippo or torch style) but it must go in your carry on not on your person or your checked luggage. lastly you can not fly with matches. you can always go to the TSAs web site to check as this changes from time to time

I flew Canada to London England last week with my pipes in checked baggage. No problems.
Flew again from London to Dublin yesterday with my pipes on carry on, no problems again. I just left my pipe tool in my checked baggage.

You can bring as many pipes as you want in carry on or checked baggage. There are restrictions against bringing a filled lighter in checked baggage (it has to be in an apoproved container), but a non torch lighter can be brought along in your carry on baggage. Security staff will typically not question lighters that look like a Bic or Zippo, but if you are bringing a lighter that looks differently, you may need to speak with a supervisor or demonstrate it is not a torch lighter. My advice is to turn the flame adjustment down to a very low level before leaving for the airport.

Depending on where you are flying (from/to) you could lose your tobacco. You will lose your pipe knife in a carry-on! I suggest you check your smoking materials in your checked luggage. Been there and done all that many times!

Pipe tool sometimes makes troubles, better to keep it in your luggage and don't take it on board. Only one time happened to my father that they refuse pipe tool on board.

I fly about twice a month lately. Here's what goes in the carry-on.

Czech tool, Tobacco (usually some loose and one or two tins), Bic lighters, matches, pipe cleaners. I haven't had an issue in months.
I just don't risk taking my Vector pipe lighter, even though it's a soft flame. Not worth the hassle and Bic / Matches work fine

I contacted my local airport and spoke to their security & inspectors, they told me the pipe, tobacco, tools and even the lighter were fine as long as they stay inside my carry on. I had no problem boarding. Even when I left the airport in Vegas they had no problem with any of the items. So it's best to call the airports you'll be arriving and leaving to be sure.
