Sorry if there already is a related post, but I couldn't find it. I will be travelling by Commercial Airline from Dallas to Seattle soon. I want to take my meer with me. I don't want to check it because of baggage loss/thievery. I figure my pipe nail and lighter will probably have to be checked, but I wanted to know if the TSA will give me hassle about bringing a pipe or tobacco on board in my carry-on.
Also as a side note, does the Seattle, WA area have any crazy smoking laws of which I should be aware?

Not only can you carry the pipe, no problem. You can take the lighter (Long as it isn't a torch) and the pipe nail on the plane too. I carry my pipes, tobacco and tools with me whenever I fly and have never even had my carry on bag opened, and I fly quite often.

I travel all the time as well and i have never had any trouble with pipes and tobacco. I always check in my lighters and pipe tools though, not for any reason jsut haven't risked it.

One other thing, they will let you take a lighter as long as it isn't a torch lighter, but you have to put it in a bin so that they can inspect it. Can't carry on pipe tools that have a blade either but you can check those.

Technically, lighters are fine, but I nearly lost my Old Boy 2 years ago because the TSA genius couldn't figure out what it was. Since then I carry a bic and check the good ones.

Does anyone read Kathy Reichs? In Fatal Voyage the plane is brought down by a lit pipe that was stuck in a pocket and forgotten in the checked luggage. By some strange combustion and a broken bottle of liquor, it caused an explosion in the luggage compartment and the plane fell out of the sky.
That's only the side plot, but it always pops into my head when I think of pipes on airplanes. I'd prefer them in the owner's hand than getting banged around in luggage.

i just get this image of Samuel L. Jackson in a TSA uniform screaming, "THERE'S M...F...ING PIPES ON THA M...F...ING PLANE!!!!"
Thanks, Everyone. My pipe nail is an actual 16 penny nail, though. Didn't know if that would matter.

Seattle is a beautiful city with lots of cool places to go, things to see and do. Unfortunately, they are also vehemently anti-tobacco. You can't even smoke in a tobacconist, not in a bar, nowhere.
The Seattle Pipe Club had to move out of Seattle and now hold their meetings on an Indian Reservation near Tacoma so they can smoke.
They did recently pass a law in WA that will exempt tobacconists and cigar bars when they pay a huge annual fee.
