We all know it and we all use it almost daily, but from what I can see it hasn’t been updated since 2013. Does anyone know what happened?
I keep bumping into pipes that can’t be found on pipephil and I do my research, but there is no good way for me to share the knowledge.
I was thinking, if there are a couple of interested people, we could try contacting the author and if he doesn’t want to continue with the project, we could. Worst case scenario I am talking about creating a new website with a more modern design, better search etc..
What do you think?

I heard a radio interview with 'Phil' Richard Faerber few years ago

I just refound that link/episode above. From memory I recall basically he'd said he was DONE with it. They asked too if anyone might take it over or restart it and he made comment that it was 'sprawling' and not in any kindof way under the hood organized IT wise and added it would be impossible for someone to just move in and take it over, saying things like its got links here, there, and just all over the place and even he had a hard time with it. Id hoped someone might 'IT slurp it' and redo it with modern tech.

I dont think from what he said/sounded like that Phil would mind if someone did a pipephil.eu 2.0 with his content but he'd thrown up his hands on it, sounded VERY burned out on it if I remember. (didnt have time to listen tonight as i write this) and I noticed the 'contact' on it is now dead too.

Sad for me too in that he and Steve with Rebornpipes are literally the only people with any kindof information on "Pipes Bizarre - Pipes~Cigare" Zeppelin pipes on the web. Mark aka Bandit/alanoblebouffarde has some as well but I lost his contact info. At this point I'm thinking of doing cigar style zeppelin pipes page for pipedia and or giving it to Reborn to post. In this area (Zeppelins) Ive compiled a lot and would hate to see 100's of hours of that digging die with me.

Anyone know Doug Valitchka's number? : )

Thank you for the extra information! I feel the exact same way about my research hours! In the last couple of months I’ve had over 30 pipes, that were not on the site and I did the research myself. I also log the dimensions of every pipe that goes through my hands, which could also be useful. What I've also noticed is that I keep needing information that is out thereabout not readily available, because it is not on one of those two websites. The perfect example for that was The Peterson's "Dingle" - I spent so many hours, trying to find any info on it, asked on multiple places if anyone knew something about it and still nothing, until @ssjones showed me the page from the Peterson Book( which I still can't find a copy of) with all the towns series. Not the Dingle was there but just on this page there were at least 5 or 6 series I\ve never heard of or seen.

Although I don't know that much about website development, I know enough to see the websites and know it was a pain in the ass to put in new entries, which explains the burnout.

My experience with websites so far is a Squarespace website I made for my car photography business. It was just so easy, affordable, easily maintained and it looks very modern, with all the modern features you expect. It also has some custom code injection features should cover our needs completely. The best part about doing it this way is that a new entry could be done from a phone and it is not much harder or longer than posting a thread in here.

Instead of "taking over" the old site, getting permission to use and reupload all the photos and research from Phil would be ideal and if we are a fe people doing that it wouldn't even take that long.
By the way do you know if there is a legal digital pdf version of the Peterson book, or if anyone is willing to part with one of his books, if they have multiple?

Im pretty sure from what Ive read and seen Phil would be fine with that, just have to find him. I think too that a lot of the pix on there are 'borrowed' from a variety of sources. The photographer in me would have an issue but the museum part of me would say 'its not for profit' and to increase (accurate) knowledge is always a good thing and outweighs a pluck off of eBay or where ever. I'm surprised Pipedia hasnt alreaady but it is done by volunteers and like they say 'be careful what you volunteer for'. And yes, if a few people take some sections one by one it wouldnt be that hard (the photo editor in me just flinched HARD though, I just finished editing 2500 high school sports photos and if didnt edit a pic for the next 3 months that'd be fine : ). My experience with web development is um,.. um,.. buying competent friends beer and saying thank you a lot. A photographer with no website, that's me tho Im on flickr at least. I wonder if the Amsterdam pipe museum might be a helpful resource. Perhaps theyve got clout enough to put up a framework and host or ask someone in their world. I do know theyre like a lot of others, kind of stretched thin in people and resources.

Im not sure about the Petersons book, my chosen rabbit hole is just Zep's. 1/2 inch wide but 100s of miles deep and dark is that niche. My moms family came from Friedrichshaven, Cuxhaven and Ihelienworth so,... must be in the blood. Im hoping to get to Wash DC, SMithsonian or Library of Congress (I live very near) and make a digital copy of "Who Made That Pipe" for myself. I heard (writers estate) theyre not fans of it being shared but one can get a fair use copy and check it's information for people when asked. If when the need calls for it, let me know. Im here kinda sporadically, (I LOVE 'lurker' : ) if I can do anything or help in any way hit me at andrewfarewell at g mail. with subject ZEPPELIN PIPES, I WILL see that right away usually.

And If i read correctly "Germany" is where you are Mr Dshift,..?

Question, theres a Zeppelin themed museum, private that I had found but now lost my reference/link for and they have one of these pipes pictured below. My white whale as they say, I have the only 3 Ive seen other than Phils but have NO idea of their origin. Pipephil has a pic of the engraving but its on a Vauen 'pipe bizarre' page and its not theirs, I asked them, so many times I think they think Im annoying : ) I'm pretty sure Phil was having some cryptic fun with it too. 8 Vauen pix of their 1996 Zep and then 1 photo of just the stamping "ZEPPELIN D.R.G.M. BREYURE" which is NOT on the Vauen. Might you know of the museum? name? I'll dig but no luck in a few of my recent searches. Ultimately all I'm wondering is who made it. I know GOC made the L'Atlantide and kindof suspect this pipe was quietly made by them as well but 1924, France and Germany,.. politics,.. only a few makers in Germany at that time. My 2nd thought is that it IS a Vauen and they dont know that. Seems crazy but my Savinelli Zep was unknown to Savenelli. When I asked "No we've never made such a pipe" "I have one" Um,.... I asked for a guess on age they said "um,.... old, very". Ohhhhh Kaaayyy. The DRGM Zep tho, 20 years searching, nothing.

You can also find it on Goodreads. Open an account and you can read The Peterson Pipe: The Story Of Kapp and Peterson without paying a ton of money.

I just checked but I don’t see any way to read the book on goodreads.

Well that sucks. I was doing a search and it was listed as being available at Goodreads. I also checked with Abebooks, but no joy there. There was also a downloadable PDF version on the Peterson blog site at one time, but that's been removed as well.
With niche items like this it's going to be hard to find without paying a premium.
