My name is Bob and I'm a pipeaholic. I address this to others likewise afflicted that also want to stop. Read on and you will see that I found a cure.
My wife was an antique collector from the start. Through close-quarter exposure, I caught it. I started my own varied collections. For the past ten years, though, I was free of collecting antiques. But the sickness was merely dormant.
Last year, I stumbled upon a dirty, foresaken briar at the local flea market for one dollar. I related to my wife that back in 1957 at the age of 11, I had sneaked a trial puff. That short-lived experiment
left me with the resolve to revisit "when I got old". A garage sale got me a collection of six
more. A rational man would have stopped there, having a full weeks rotation. No, I was hooked. Drawn
then to EBAY, I won two large lovats that are wonderful. Then came the 3 inch tall meer for $10
which also fueled the need for more. Then It happened. I had won another collection of 6 that shook me
with a slap of remorse. Two were cobs with one having no bowl bottom. One of the briars had
a shank crack. All rejects; and they all reeked of Half&Half. How do I stop?
Luckily, 4 decades of the restoration of wood furniture and basement workshop became my savior. I vowed that if I
wanted more pipes, I would make them. I went back to EBAY, but now only to browse the pictures for
inspiration. There are at least 20 homemades; all drastically dissimilar. If I desired another,
it would bring 4 to 20 hours labor and perhaps a weeks wait for curing, drying, and break-in beyond
that. The fever has gone down.
Sadly, I recently caught myself starting a pipe-lighter collection. I am not collectibles-cured; only in remission.
I welcome responses/confessions. Start with your name followed by the admission you are a
pipeaholic.
