My wife doesn't smoke, never has, but encourages my pipe smoking. She even says I should smoke inside which I choose not to do because we have very young children. She likes the smell of pipes although she is totally intolerant of cigarette smoke, even outside. I mostly smoke a pipe while taking the dogs for a walk. I actually like when the weather is a little crappy, not wind, but perhaps a little cold or wet. That way I'm doing everyone a favor by taking the dogs out while getting a chance to enjoy a pipe away from the wife and children.

Right now I am smoking a pipe on a park bench getting ready to go inside the library to work on a paper from my research. This is time I'd be away from my wife anyway.

I understand your wife's total intolerance of cigarette smoke. I have never been a cigarette smoker, started smoking pipes about 1.4 years ago, cigars about 3 months ago, and I cannot tolerate even the TINIEST amount of cigarette smoke, inside or out. It's simply vile to me. Don't know why, but there you have it.

My wife has never been a smoker and HATED when I used to smoke cigarettes. But I have recently stopped drinking and been sober for 93 days, she'll take me stepping outside and smoking a pipe over her worrying about me being dead or in jail from the drink.

She sure is a keeper.
Good on you, & her too. It ain't easy, well do I know. I was an accomplished alcoholic for many years. The last 28 years I've just been a high-functioning lunatic. -laugh-

My wife surprised me yesterday.

She said my pipe smelled nice and asked me what I was smoking!

She ALWAYS complains about the smell!

So I ratcheted my jaw up off the floor and told her “Queen Anne’s Revenge.”

Ever since my wife went on the "whatever" drug Zoloft, she doesn't care wether the Sun comes up or not, she simply doesn't give a rats a$$ about pipes, cigars, drugs, booze, etc.

“Husbands love your wife as...”

What do husbands want from their wife? Sex. What do women want from their husband? To be listened to.

I find that once these wants are given and accepted by both parties, other things that please each other can be discussed without hidden retribution or blame. What I have found helpful in having my wife accept that I am a pipe smoker is having a discussion about other possible wants and their possible conclusions into obsession.

Alcohol, given its possible misuse can lead to a driving drunk charge with heavy fines, loss of drivers license and loss of job, domestic abuse, and child abuse.

Pornography, given its possible misuse can lead to a pre-occupation with self and an ever deepening drive to find different acts of stimulation.

Living includes testing and knowing one’s limits. Pipe smoking, given its possible misuse can lead to ...tongue bite? But the smell of stale tobacco breath Is a complete turn-off. Yes, and the scent of most women’s perfume can give a skunk a headache .

I caution all men. Many it seems, want to be under the power of a woman. It makes them feel needed. But men, leaders, were made to lead not need.

My Fiancee has her medical marijuana card for severe stomach issues, so she has her glass pipes, and I have my briar. I tried to get her into cigars before I picked up the pipe, and there were only two she liked (Tatuaje Skinny Tiff and a Cuban H. Upmann) so I don't really try to push the tobacco on her. Every once in a while she'll take a puff of mine, when it's something smooth and naturally sweet, but other than that, our place is always filled with one kind of smoke or another. I don't usually puff her pipes either, I'm more than content with a good nicotine buzz and I have no medical need to smoke cannabis. The flavors don't usually mesh too well anyway.
I did also mostly give up smoking cigarettes because she's worried about my health, but my compromise was to only smoke the high-end Nat Shermans, which are very good and very hard to find. If I can't find them, I don't smoke cigarettes. Nothing better than a cigarettello or an Original Brown on a cold winter day

"19 years those types of details seem superfluous. "
Until one of you dies and the attorneys gather for the "ritual" picking of the bones at the behest of the survivors. Your roomie could be left with tremendous debt, homeless, penniless, etc., depending on your state's laws. Especially true if there are "blood kin."

Webster tends to write in broad generalities. Happily, he is not the only member to write unsupportable generalities, making some threads really entertaining.

"talking to a professional."
A professional what? Shrink? Prostitute? Couch salesman/woman?
What would be the goal? Becoming a believer in what the (fill in the blank) is selling?

if you ask me they both need those things. It's just most men know someone is going to listen to them and most wives know if they really wanted too well they wouldn't have to rely on their husband (doesn't matter if they never would, it still helps to know). That's my theory and I am sticking to it, because I am old enough to pretend my opinions are set (they're not).

Well I guess at the moment we're lucky because were we live the common law laws got removed but where grandfathered. The rule was at the time we were first together was basically you're common law if you're engaged but holding off on the wedding for pretty much any reason. Usually can't afford the wedding or waiting till all the relatives can come. Which makes sense because it was a really old law which was mostly based on the idea that you might not actually be able to find someone who legally could marry you nearby.
On the last point about professionals. One time at a party I talked with an escort and she insisted she spent more time playing therapist then what people think about her doing. I still don't know if we were just talking or she was trying out some type of sales pitch.

I like to drink beer, whiskey, and the occasional strawberry daiquiri with a little umbrella in it :puffy:
I also like to smoke full flavored tobaccos and cigars, as well as the occasional aromatic.
you should be embarrassed by the daiquiris not cause they're girly. But because they're an abuse to all the people who worked hard on making the liquor and then you go and cover it up with strawberry and other stuff. Also reminds me of this....

If my wife avoided me while I smoked, I would never see her.
When I met her, she demanded that I stop smoking before she would go out with me, because she lost her father to cigarettes and lung cancer when she was young, so she was a smoking-nazi. But, after some discussion, she settled for quitting cigs for the pipe. And, I have always been able to smoke inside, as the whole family loves the smells and aromas of natural tobacco. It smells like home.

Now, she will smoke the occasional cigar, and when we are out and about and she smells an aromatic tobacco, I have to restrain her from telling the aromatic smoker that their balls will drop one day and they will smoke real tobacco. One time in a humidor at the local cigar pub, she told a guy who asked for a vanilla cigar, "oh excuse me, I thought you were a man. ha ha."
I don't profile people like that. I'm not sure where she gets it. But, I have to remind her that she used to be an anti-smoking freak. She just shrugs and says that guys who smoke those things need to develop thick skins and a sense of humor. :puffy:
Smoke what you like; like what you smoke. And, don't be embarrassed buy your girly choices in life. :puffy:

Hilarious. Your wife sounds like good people.

We come here to build community around the topic of pipes, tobacco. If we keep it there, it will stay positive. We all I have a way of life we subscribe to, I certainly do. If I meet you in person one day and you are interested, we can talk about it. Until then, here's to being briar brothers (sisters accepted too).
