All Virginias. Coming from Maduro cigars, to heavy lay blends, I thought Virginia's were bland and boring. Then one day, the lights came on. Now I predominantly smoke VA's and still am unsure if latakia will continue to have a place in my rotation. I just don't really have the desire to smoke a lat blend anymore. I'm curious if colder weather will change that.

The first time I tried Mac Baren Old Dark Fired I didn't like it at all. I put the tin away and around 6-8 months later gave it another try. I fell in love with it so much so I went deep in the cellar buying 65 3.5 oz tins. I was lucky that both SP and PC had sales within a couple of weeks from each other. One had their sale price at 9.99 and the other was 10.99. It was one of the first blends that I completed cellaring back in 2012.

Quite a few in this category, which I attribute to needing to "learn" a blend. Often I like the blends I have to learn better than those I like right off. Two examples would be Iwan Ries Three Star Blue and C&D Bayou Night. Especially Bayou Night, boy, it was harsh and mean and nasty with that first order of two ounces. I must have liked something about it because I smoked it up, but I didn't reorder for about two years. Maybe by then I had figured it out, and now it is among my favorites. It is a sturdy blend with a lot to like, and in the jar smells like a stable.

Different strokes for different folks. I love Haddo's. It's nectar for the Gods.

On the other hand, my impression of Germain's version of Balkan Sobranie is that it smells and tastes like gasoline infused puppy farts. I've tried to like it, but I can't smoke more than a few puffs without longing for death. Yet, people are shelling out $40 to $50 bucks for a tin of this poo, which demonstrates the power of a famous name and badly reproduced tin art.

I also haven't warmed to Penznace. Oh well...

I love White Knight, always wanted to try the original Balkan Sobranie Smoking Mixture, and was so disappointed when I finally got my hands on some new "Balkan Sobranie."

It took me a long time to learn how to smoke slow and gentle enough to enjoy Virigina blends. That also translated well to learning how to smoke aromatics. Some blends, at least in my experience, need to be treated in a particular way to deliver their best smoke, and that can vary a lot from blend to blend.

For me all pipe tobaccos improve with some aging. So, anything I don't initially like I put aside and come back to it later. That works for most, but not all of them. A good example of an unredeamable tobacco is S.G. Firedance Flake, which remains terrible even after years in a jar.

I bought a tin of Peterson my mixture 965 .... I am a fan of English blends...... Almost instantly the blend was bitter and harsh and it seemed for absolutely no reason.

Sounds to me like maybe you weren't used to or expecting the Oriental influence. It caught me a bit off guard at first, also. The sourness is a bit of an acquired taste, but now I really dig it.

In reply to the OP, my B&M guy sold me on a tin of Hyde Park early in my pipe experience.

My first smoke was not appreciated and that tin laid around here 6 or 8 months before I took another crack at it.

Second time in, I emptied the tin at a record pace and moved on into the realm of Lakelands with great enthusiasm.

Most OTC blends. Prince Albert, Carter hall, Grainger, half and half, sir Walter, ect. Blah I think every one of these I bought went straight to the trash and that's where they belong ? I did used to buy prince Albert and roll my own cigarettes but I cant stand anything that taste like cigarettes anymore and that was I get from these blends.

Considering there are latakia, oriental, perique, burley, Virginia, and flavored cigarettes, that's fairly impossible.

I was never introduced to all them fancy cigarettes. They didn't carry all that crap 20 years ago at the gas station I bought my cigarettes from lol maybe a better description would have been an ashtray full of stale ashes and moldy cardboard that's what I taste from OTC blends. I really wanted to like them it would have been very convenient to just run down to the local drug store and grab a pouch and not have to order everything offline.
