I've referenced the site extensively over the years. I've found certain reviewers whose tastes mirror mine fairly closely and often evaluate those reviews before trying a new blend. I read Jim's to see what the dominant flavor components are and to of course, see his thoughts on the blend. I'm not sure how someone can enjoy pipe smoking enough to post here and ignore the reviews. Great resource that is free!
I'm certainly on board with that comment; relying and/or assuming just one reviewer has captured the product is pretty narrow when there is an entire internet out there (including this forum) full of "amateurs" that seem to as (if not more) accurately describe the product.

"Comes meus fuit illo miserrimo tempo"... Or in my native English "It was my companion at that most miserable time." This is what my tobacco was to me.

'Twas many years after my escapades in the Americas, what I hath considered to be the prime of mine own life, that I was sitting in my prison tower, awaiting execution. It wasn't the first time I had been in prison. My first imprisonment came shortly after I broke off my relations with Queen Elizabeth for one of her hand maidens. This enraged the Queen, my backing out of our love affair. I wanted someone new, young and fresh. In the end, I spent the fair Queen for all she was worth in the Bedroom; the woman was experienced, I shall commend her to that. Quite naughty was our affair; many times she wouldsts pleasure me in most the inopportune of places, such as at the royal Banquets. Often during those banquets she would commence to pleasure me beneath the dinner table by giving to me a handeth jobbeth amidst the meal and conversation. The Queen's methods were quite clever in nature, often she would take a pat of butter or grease from a turkey leg in place of lubricant in order to "do her Majesty's work". I would maintain my composure through out, not a one at the dinner parties wouldst be aware of what was occurring beneath the tablecloth, for even at my moment of climax, my face was as solemn as a sailor. She took thrill in the possibility of being caught. Many times I wouldst receive a reacheth aroundeth, or she wouldst ride me as if I were a noble steed. But however pleasurable she may have been, nothing could make up for that foul face which she bore. And her hand maiden was privy to all the same tricks as the Queen, and more refined and well developed tricks of a younger generation. I shouldst mention also that the youth of the bonny lass contributed to the dexterity of her hands and fingers. She was also able to rolleth her tongue. Consequently the Queen, in a Jealous rage, threw us into prison. We stayed there until the Queen needed me to embark on expeditions to the Americas. This only gave me more free time to explore the maiden's "Golden City."

That 'twas the first time. On this second occasion I am accused of espionage, which may or may not be truth. As I sat there I sought back in mine own mind to the prime days. Days when I explored for the city of Gold, and found only jungle and women whom wouldst pleasure me to the extent of which I felt as if I had turned to gold! I think back to the disaster days of Roanoke, that glorious debacle. I lighteth my pipe of tobacco one last time, to enjoy my old friend before death is dealt my way.

I take my last puff of smoke as the guards come take me away to have my head severed. No matter, I hath shared a bed with more women that one couldst count; my life 'tis complete. I am guided to the city square where many hath gathered to watch the Great Sir Walter Raleigh be executed. I look into the executioners eyes as I kneel down before the chopping block. I request to see the blade that will take my life. 'Twas a good blade, indeed. To the executioner I say "Let us dispatch, At this hour my ague comes upon me. I would not have my enemies think I quaked from fear" I lay my head on the block, ready for the death dealing blow of the ax, as I cry out "STRIKE MAN, STRIKE, as I did to thine mother last night!" In blind rage, executioner swings his axe. Darkness.”

so some people really like reviews and others just don't care all that much. So yeah you're not alone in the camp of not really finding anything to enjoy about reviews camp, we're going to have to circle the wagons to keep out those that do read reviews and find them useful. Or they're going to come over and make sure our faces have some grassy over tones. Man I see why someone asked if this site is secure recently. It's not we sit on the edge of bloodshed (not to be confused with the blood shed where they store their blood at the budget hospital.)

I like @jiminks reviews even though I know I’m not going to taste every little minor note that he does. An example of the way I read his reviews:

“The Virginias are grassy with some tart and tangy citrus, a bit of earth and wood with a little tangy, bready dark fruit and a touch of honey and floralness.”

Knowing my own palate, this says to me that I should expect a fairly dynamic, sweet, grassy, Virginia component.

“The earthy, woody, sparkly Saint James perique is a tad more plumy, raisiny, figgy stewed sweet than peppery in an important complementary support role, and is very noticeable in every puff.”

To me this says I should expect to experience the peppery side of the Perique and the prunes/raisins/figs fruity side of it as well, and that it is a very noticeable condiment in the blend.

So on and so forth. I enjoy reading Jim’s reviews, and even though I might not taste every tiny element that he does, I still find them incredibly helpful in deciding which blends I’d like to try next.

Tobacco reviews let me know if a majority of people find this blend to be more peppery/sweet/spicy and so on. The nuances I don't pay attention to because of personal differences in taste, but if the majority of people say "x" blend is more pepper than anything else, I know I can steer clear because I don't enjoy pepper bombs.

I write reviews mostly to have a record of what I think of a blend...I have the palate of a goat so it’s doubtful anyone will glean any kind of useful insight from a review of mine, and I think mostly I’m a wee bit drunk when I write them.

I’ll often read a few reviews of a blend before purchasing, but like a lot of you have said here...it’s just the same 15 or so adjectives thrown about. What happened to “burns to a fine white ash?” That used to be the hallmark of every review.

I believe that most of us (excepting JimInks and a few others with exceptional palates) couldn’t discern between two blends in a blind taste test anyway. It reminds me of the experiment they set up a few years ago with the wine aficionado people-they set up a blind tasting, except every glass contained the same, cheap wine. Each taster proceeded to taste each wine and rate each one differently. So why put too much stock in reviews, anyway? Anything beyond the broadest descriptors-spicy, sweet, strong etc-is subjective to each individual.

My Secret Santa gave me two blends I've never smoked, so I read the reviews of those two blends. I usually only read JimInks and Pipestuds...that's enough for me. I don't use reviews to help me decide on which new blend to try, I usually will try new blends that are mentioned often on the forum. Lately, Granger has been mentioned often, so now I want to try it. Another is Condor. It's mentioned so often, it peaks my interest.

Yeah there are two ways I try new blend. Gut instinct and hearing people talk about the blend in a non review situation on this site. That's how I tried EGR for example. Often it's more about the simple single line description that gets me.

I like to read a few along but do get tired of the limited adjectives as mentioned here earlier.

I'm guilty of scrolling through and looking for @jiminks reviews, taking that in and moving along with the understanding I was seeking in the first place.

I love TR. It helped me translate my tobacco experiences into the common vernacular of the hobby.

I also used ot to scout blends. I rely on a small group of reviewers that seem to put to words the smoking characteristics of the tobaccos I am interested in.

Jim and Pipestud were the two I became familiar with first, but Gentleman Zombie and SteveB also have a pretty good handle on things. Between the 4 of them, (well up to 4, depending on who has reviewed what), I know when to buy blind.

Haven't been burnt (nyuk nyuk nyuk) yet. puffy

Addendum: TR was crucial in the inputting of my cellar into tobaccocellar.com. it is the only place that had descriptions of damn near everything.

P.S. are SteveB and/or GZ members here?

I read Jims.....always appear spot on to my taste....(we have different tastes though!).

When I'm feeling gullible I read a few more.....(just like I did with HiFI reviews for years).....then I usually come to my senses when I realise the reference to "Bass notes" is about tobacco...........

Each to their own though................... I'm pleased people enjoy writing......and reading them.

Personally I prefer smoking certain blends in a subwoofer. Although the bass notes aren't as clear they really hit you in the gut.

I just find them fun to read but usually take them with a grain of salt when it comes to tastes like angel farts or some other flowery language.

I review there under the same name, if it helps other pipe smokers then my job is done. I also consult it for new tobaccos with reviewers that more or less have the same taste profile as mine.

First I look for five star ratings on my favourite tobacco, then I look at their favourite lists. That’s it. I would rather read crime thrillers than wordy reviews.

I sometimes enjoy reading reviews and would wish to thank those who make them? Although they are, as our tastes usually are, often very subjective. Some reviews are made after smoking a few or even a single bowl in a random pipe, whereas I myself may get very different experiences, depending on how long the tin has been opened, the pipe used, time of the day, the weather, what I have been eating beforehand, my mood and especially whether I had a beer, wine, coffee or tea, before or while smoking. I therefore take opinions of others and my own first impressions with a grain of salt. My own palate has never been sufficiently developed or consistent but I do immediately 'detect' when something tastes more or less 'natural', when eg heavy casing and topping is used to disguise a lower quality tobacco, like using artificial vanilla in cheap chocolate. I usually finish a tin, before making my own final verdict, which I however better keep for myself, sorrypuffy

We all started somewhere. TobaccoReviews and these forums helped me immensely during my 1st year journey into pipe smoking. Yes I read and will continue to read/peruse reviews for fun, education, etc... So, from a newer pipe smoker, I'll add a big THANK YOU to those that take the time to write and post their thoughts on various blends regardless of their literary prowess.
