Basically, tobacco is tobacco. The form you buy it in has been tailored to a certain end: pipe, RYO, cigarette, cigar, chew. The end determines the cut, the additives and in most cases, the choice of leaf. Not necessarily in quality, but for instance in cigarette tobacco price is very important, as are availability, suitability to industrial manufacture, etcetera. Within every variety you'll find lower and higher end brands with more, less or even no additives and whether you prefer to smoke it, eat it or whatever is entirely up to you. I've never been brave enough to try, but my grandfather treated himself to a crushed cigar in his pipe on a Sunday. The opposite of pipe tobacco as a cigarette, so smoking RYO in a pipe, is something I've seen done and have tried, too. I wouldn't recommend abandoning your favorite blends in favour of Drum or Samson just yet.
