I live smack-dab in the middle of the Reading Prong, which is the largest uranium deposit on earth. Radon gas is the by-product that we are warned about here. The Prong runs from Reading, Pa to Boston. I have bigger worries than pipe smoking although I bet a bus gets me in the end.

What was it Mark Twain said?? Lies, damn lies and statistics. One can manipulate stats to conform to whatever the point they are trying to make is.

My father is a lung doc. I can never remember the actual title of the specialty, the word is too big lol.

But, like I said, he's a lung doctor. In addition to critical care, surgery and pretty much every-damn-thing else. He smoked cigars for years. In college, he smoked a pipe.

When he found out I was smoking a pipe he told me one thing: "Don't inhale, son."

To this day he believes that smoking a pipe or cigar is not really harmful to one's health, and even if one were smoking ciggies but not inhaling it wouldn't do much harm either.

Their next propaganda will prove that thinking about tobacco causes cancer.

I have a perfect example of statistics used to support an invalid argument. I recently stumbled upon DHMO.org a website dedicated to banning Dihydrogen Monoxide worldwide. Dihydrogen Monoxide, or DHMO, has been found at every school shooting worldwide, the Nazi death camps, as well as linked to every cancer known to man. Click on this sentence to see the research. Here is a direct quote from the website explaining DHMO:
Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters. The atomic components of DHMO are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol.
So what exactly is DHMO? Dihydrogen, 2 Hydrogen, Monoxide, 1 Oxygen,so therefore we have H20, water. This is a perfect example of how people can be swayed to believe something is wrong just by using persuasive rhetoric and statistics.

I have to say that is the funniest anti website I have found. To think they likely make millions of dollars from the sheeple. Ah, what a country we live in. I hope some of the supporters totally stop their use of DHMO.

I know of someone who died in a car accident, and their cause of death was listed as tobacco related. So no, you can't trust the statistics.

I just found this quote from Mark Twain:

...when they used to tell me I would shorten my life ten years by smoking,

they little knew the devotee they were wasting their puerile word upon --

they little knew how trivial and valueless I would regard a decade that had no smoking in it!
- letter to Joseph Twichell, 19 Dec 1870

A dentist owns my local tobacconist and he said the chance oh getting cancer from pipes and cigars so long as you dont inhale is slim.

I started a similar thread when I was diagnosed with acute pencreatitis several months ago. You might want to dig up that thread since so much of the data is transferrable to your question. My conclusion, following months of personal research in addition to the wisdom provided in that forum, is that while some risk might be present the balance of risk vs. reward is clear. I continue to enjoy my pipe as will we all.

In my opinion its all about moderation. I only smoke. About 5 to 6 bowls a month. I think its all about quantity factor. If someone smoke 3 or 5 bowls a day I think the risk rises. I have a real fear about mouth cancer so my only preventive way is no abuse of the quantity that I smoke. For me 1 or 2 bowls a week is good

I actually expect pipe smoking to lengthen my life. I am a Vietnam vet and have pretty serious PTSD. Also, thanks to Agent Orange, I have coronary artery disease. Don't get out the handkerchiefs — I'm a solo backpacker and can work much harder than the average human my age, but I have to watch out for the rages that are typical of PTSD. When I lose it, my blood pressure rockets up to a level that's dangerous for my partially blocked coronary arteries. So I try to avoid assholes and I also relax with my pipe three time a day. About a half-bowl each time. I've been smoking for about two months now and I'm a much calmer man. Even if smoking were goint to shave a few years off my potential life span, I'm convinced that a more reflective me is far less likely to suffer a rage-born heart attack and check out way too early. My half-hour sessions are the only conscious down time I have. Not only is the smoking a pleasure, but the calmness lingers. I am in search of preservative-free 'natural' tobaccos and would really be cheered if someone came into the marketplace with some fine-smoking organic pipe tobacco, but I am a happier, and at least mentally healthier man now that I'm a pipe smoker.

Cornell & Diehl is probably the closest you'll come to organic. They don't use artificial humectants, only distilled water.
