Pipe Sweetener

It's like snake oil. Tobacconists learned to promote such gunk for, well, to sweeten their cash intake for the day.

What I find funny about that is every time I've asked a pipe shop about the sweetener I usually get the same reply. Which is what you said with the addition of there are a couple of customers that swear by the junk. I can't really comment never tried the product. But the one pipe I had that did go full on incurably sour the only thing that actually cured it was wet coffee grounds over night.

Real question- Is that put out by the Gallo brothers, perhaps under another name?

Yes. Originally a product of Earnest and Julio Gallo. First distilled in Fresno, CA.

E&J brandy. We always called it erk and jerk. Not sure why though.

I like good ole Ethyl alcohol better than either sweetener (just a denatured alcohol) or a splash of water

When I've got the urge to use sweetner I always go for Everclear. It' high proof, imparts no flavor, and is cheap. Checks all my boxes.
