I stumbled upon these snippets of trivia on the web today. I presume they should be taken with a large pinch of salt.
#1 The fastest pipe smoker on record is an auto mechanic from New York City, who accidentally soaked his pipe tobacco with gasoline instead of Irish Whiskey. His time for 3.3g was 1.3 seconds.
#2 The record for the most matches ever used on a single bowlful of tobacco is held by a Cape Cod pipe puffer who, on December 4 1927, went through 239 matches to keep his briar smouldering in the wake of a fierce Northeastern gale.
Anyone else got any equally useless nuggets (true or false) of pipe smoking bullshit lore?
Regards,
Jay.

Under the theory of convection dynamics the most effective way to smoke a pipe is with the bowl upside-down.

The record for smoking a pipe for the longest time without relighting belongs to Dr Lubomir Cinka (Czech Republic) who smoked his pipe continuously for 3 hr 4 min 35 sec at the 2001 World Cup in Pipesmoking Championship which was held at Ascot racecourse, Berkshire, UK, on 14 October 2001. Each contestant started with a championship briar pipe handed out by the organisers, two matches, 3g tobacco and a wooden tamper. They were sat at tables of ten with a steward at each table.

Stillman Mixture blended by E. Hoffman Co. of Chicago, was introduced in 1857 and went out of production for 70 years before it was re-introduced. It is a blend of Virginia, Latakia,Turkish and cubed burley. The reinvention of the blend took years of research, according to the blurb in the Iwan Ries catalog where it is offered.

Iwan Ries boasts of an inventory of more than 15,000 pipes; which, if laid end-to-end, would span a distance of more than a mile and a quarter.
Edit: current fig. is 12000, so just 1 mile.

You would think they could add a few more to their website then

I agree. They're probably missing out on a lot of sales. It probably wouldn't help to go there in person to ask about a particular pipe either, because no one can know exactly what they have in stock without references of some kind.

I can't help but wonder if the chap who used up 239 matches was smoking McClelland's Dark Star...that is the devil of a tobacco to get going even once dried!

In my experience ad blockers have interfered with those videos.
BTW, on the forum home page, Latest Discussions, there is a sticky thread for the Video Library.
