Yeah, the airway is actually straight.

That pathway looks like it's getting awfully close to the edges of the shank. Too close for any durability. It's possible that the airway undulates, just at a lesser amount. Curved airways have been around since the 19th century.

I have no ruffled collars, but have several clay pipes that look similar to those depicted in the first illustration. They smoke quite well.
