100 fluffy BJ Long pipe cleaners cost .0159 cents when I buy them on sale at 1.59. Bristle cost .0198 cents at the same 1.59 for 80. I think I can afford to use as many pipe cleaners as necessary to guarantee me a clean pipe. Whenever they go on sale, I buy 20 packs of each.

OK, Harris, you got me as a cheap bastard!!, —> over 100 of my supply were gifts or "lagniappe"! But it's less about saving on cleaners than having a sweet clean pipe. Lots of ways to get there.
Happy bowls!

Some aromatics is likely leaves a sour taste at the last third or fourth of the bowl. When this happened, I usually toss em out and stop smoking. I Agree with @Chasing Embers for the cause. All the moisture, tar, and nicotine are left in the bottom of the bowl that made it taste sour.

Well, now I feel like trying the air pocket method just to see how well it works for me. I just hate having those last few pulls turn sour, ruining what would have been an otherwise fantastic smoke.

For about a year now, I have been using John's (jpmcwjr) method of water cleaning, and my pipes all look brand new all of the time. They smell fresh, no shtray smells at all, and they smoke sweet every time.
For years and years, I have just used the traditional method to have my pipe rack smell of ashtray, and pipes eventually smoked sweet, but they took longer, and cleaning all of them with alcohol was messy, nasty, and time consuming. The few minutes it takes to rinse a pipe, ream with a paper towel, and then swab with a pipe cleaner is minimal, and not an inconvenience on my day at all. Whereas, finding somewhere to buy high proof alcohol in my area is a long drive, then breaking them all down, and piles of nasty pipe cleaners.
Plus, my pipes all look beautiful, with a quick buff with a polishing cloth after the rinse, and they smell great at all times.
But, it is all a matter of what works best for you. As John says, many different ways to achieve the same results.

I have never really tried a method like that, mostly because for some reason, I'd have never thought that it was good for a WOODEN pipe to be soaked in water. I always thought that it might just swell up and nothing would fit right again. So in the case of this particular pipe, just for shits and giggles, I'm going to clean the hell out it, and start washing them all out at the end of the day.
Does this same procedure apply to cobs, or do you just wipe the bowl, and use a cleaner on the stem?

Nah, cobs are held together with glue, old string, and duct tape. If you wash those, they collapse. Ha ha
Don't soak the pipe in water. Rinse them. It's like when you clean really nice antique furniture, you have to wipe it down with water and Murphy soap to keep it in spectacular condition, but if you set a glass on it without a coaster you destroy it. Wiping it with water is ok. Soaking it in water is a completely different thing.

Okay, so...my progress is as such...I just used the air pocket method with some Captain Black Original packed into my MM Cob. Smoke was great, just had a few more relights than usual, but that might improve with packing technique. I smoked the whole thing, but got a couple of bit of debris in my mouth on the draw a couple of times. Not the end of the world at all. I think I kind of like this method. Didn't have any gurgle at all, the smoke was smooth, and refreshing.
Now for the one I sent the pics of, I have given it the day off, just used your water technique on it and ran hot water through the bowl and stem, cleaning with pipe cleaners and paper towels until it was clean....dear God, I didn't realize how much build-up was in there. I used like 5 or 6 cleaners on it, so I will be cleaning it this way more often. I just made a cup of coffee and intend to try the used coffee ground method to try and decrease the ashy smell.
The MM cob, I just ran a moist paper towel around inside the bowl to clear out any build-up that might have already started.

Sounds like you're on track. I've found that if the tobacco is sufficiently dry, there's no need for "packing technique". YMMV. Esp. with aromatics.

Well, I was using Captain Black for this mornings puff break, and that stuff just does not seem to dry out very well at all. On others I will makes sure they're dry enough, but even with the CB, I didn't really dry it out at all, just to see what what happen, straight from pouch, pinch a bunch together, packed it like I saw in the air pocket method video, then just pressed it below the rim a bit. Smoked just fine, but I swear, matches are a horrible choice here at the office. They got out with hardly any breeze at all, but once I got her lit, it was all down hill from there.
