So awhile ago I learned about the book pipe smoking in middle-earth,being a fan of Lord of the rings and such I'm pretty interested on reading it and was rather dissapointed to find out its out of print and unavailable in the places I've checked, recently two listing were added to amazon, one of them is over $2000!the other is over $3000!! Those prices are just ridiculous and very sad to see, just thought I'd rant about this a bit.

Yikes, those are some crazy prices!
I recently had a similar problem when I discovered a book that I decided I needed, it was Upon the Distinction Between the Ashes of the Various Tobaccos by S.H. edited by Nino Cirone --- the asking prices weren't as crazy as the PSiME you listed, but most were really high, but I finally found a copy for a decent price...

...had the same problem trying to secure a copy of Kendal Brown: The History of Kendal's Tobacco and Snuff Industry by Dunderdale but also finally scored a copy on the cheap --- just exercise some patience and continue with your diligent searching and a copy will pop up at some point for a more reasonable sum I'm sure.
In the meantime,

googlebooks has a limited preview to browse through:

Mark Irwin is one of my absolute favorite "pipe writers",

his stuff is always great!

Link doesn't connect to story . . .
...if you're talking about the Christmas Pipe story,

the link got screwed up when NeatPipes redesigned their website,

it's still there, along with many other gems by Mark Irwin.

Those prices are awful. As others have said, with patience I've been able to find much wallet-friendlier prices. Free market and all, but still. Ouch.

It's not $88 cool, unless you're really into Tolkien & pipes & enjoy owning books, etc. For that cross-over aficionado I can absolutely see someone buying it for $88 & not having remorse about it. But for a couple hundred? It's a reeeelly slender volume. You'd have to absolutely want it.

I am all of those things. But I also change about 10 size 3 diapers a day, which you can buy quite a few of for $88. 5 years ago, I probably would have dropped the coin and nabbed it for my library.

Unfortunately what was "F* it, I'm buying it!" back then has now become "F* you, Wife! I'm buying it!"

Doesn't go over nearly as well. Really have to pick and choose. Only get so many of those in a lifetime while still retaining a nut sac.
