Pipe smoking etiquette; NEIGHBORS

Make it a game. When they come back out, you go back out and light up. See what happens. Go out and light up whenever you see them outside. If this is a definite pattern and not a coincidence, to hell with them.

I liked cortezattic's answer, fire up the grill, that was great! But I swear! You're in your yard man, outside! Maybe Mom just likes to go topless, and your pleasant tobacco smoke alerted her to your presents. I'd drill a 2" hole in the fence and get my digi-cam ready! HaHaaa!

Seriously, I know people are going overboard on smoking these days, but I say to H*** with them if they actually did go in because of you! We burn paper trash in 55 gallon drums here still (Arkansas).

I smoke inside, outside and in my trucks.... (Not when the grandkids are here) but I don't mind the porch, or I just go to the lake camp... Piss on 'Em!

Is it possible they just had to go inside to answer a phone call or have their afternoon snack?
Do they even know what you are smoking? Perhaps the mom is protecting her kids from the "drug addict" who lives next door.
Are your leaning over the fence and intentionally blowing smoke at the kids as they walk by?
Without more info there is no way to know what's going on. My guess is that you are just being too sensitive.
Can you provide a photo of your back yard smoking area so we can see how close you are the neighbors?

Smoke away brother its your yard and 2 if they are alays outside the second hand smoke if there is any there way should be the last of their worries as they are going to probley get cancer from the sun exposure.

Not everyone runs from the smell of smoke. Kids and moms have their own activities, just enjoy your yard and pipes.

I agree with everybody else. It is your place and you pay to live there, therefore you can do whatever on your property.
It is kinda like when we had a moron that was riding a dirt bike in HIS backyard that attached to our fence and some other people. Somebody called the cops on him for the noise that occurred at all hours of the day. The cop basically said it is his property, he can do what he wishes. He said somebody could get out mowing the yard at 3am, but you can't do anything since it is their property.
In short, keep enjoying your pipe and don't worry about what the neighbors think. If she is worried about second hand smoke at such a distance she must be crazy. The smoke is so diluted by the time it gets to them it could do no harm.

My neighbor is an A$$! They like my fireplace smoke but hate my pipe and dislike me. I usually wait until they are in their back yard and then light a heavy Latakia blend and walk along my fence separating our properties bellowing as much smoke as I can when the wind will carry it to them. Good fences make good neighbors. Especially, when they are the obnoxious ones!

In all honestly, yes it is your yard, but I must admit, I have poker games here at my house, some of us smoke, others do not. While I do smoke in my house, I do not smoke or allow smoking at the games, out of courtesy for the non smokers. However, the great outdoors is an altogether different situation. We've been in our house for 20 years and all of our neighbors always see me with a cigar or pipe. No one has said anything about the smoke. I suppose I'm lucky but I'd smoke on my property regardless.

It seems like you're feeling guilty for no reason, be proud of your past-time! I'm betting they all went to dinner or a movie. I wouldn't worry about it unless they say something to you. In this age of screwed up smoking legislation and hate propaganda, the best thing we can do as pipe smokers is not be self conscious and fearful of what others may think. Instead be proud, confident, and prepared to educate the public.

If you pipe is the bother switch to some fine cigars for a while. Before you know it they'll be wishin' you had your pipe. Just like a puppy, your neighbors need some training. Don't ever stop living large man. It's a reality check in a man's world.
