I'm thinking of bidding on a book called 'Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Chinese' by William Alexander printed ~1814.

It has many exquisitely hand coloured plates relating to the title and I was struck by how many individuals were smoking pipes.....very long pipes at that. Would that be a tobacco pouch affixed to some of the pipes I wonder?

Here are a few I thought might appeal to those with an interest in such things....

Even the ladies got in on the act.....

And this is what happens to you if you're caught outside not smoking a pipe.....
