Pipe Smoking Chinese Style circa 1814.

I'm thinking of bidding on a book called 'Picturesque Representations of the Dress and Manners of the Chinese' by William Alexander printed ~1814.

It has many exquisitely hand coloured plates relating to the title and I was struck by how many individuals were smoking pipes.....very long pipes at that. Would that be a tobacco pouch affixed to some of the pipes I wonder?

Here are a few I thought might appeal to those with an interest in such things....

Whatever is happening all three gentlemen (including the one tied to the post) seem pretty relaxed about the whole thing.

So what you are bidding on is a really early version in picture form of the Grand Parents of Cheech and Chong in their original adventure 'Wup en Smok' filmed in China!

probably not. Too fiddly to have an opium smoke while out and about. And clothe or leather wouldn't really be a good carrying case for opium. It's gummy.

It looks like the guy in plate 48 can't decide if he should smoke his pipe or use it as a weapon. Either way the guy tied to the post looks a bit worried.

Austria used to have a law back in the 18th c that entitled (maybe even required) people to beat down anyone caught smoking tobacco. It was to build a sense of community and camaraderie... sort of like the forum.

The illustrations appear rather stylised to me.
I wonder how "true to life" they really are ?
