I am a new pipe smoker and am still learning the art of everything. I really am looking for either a pipe club in the area or a pipe mentor so to say. I am a young guy at 24 years old and find that staff at the tobacconists I've been to talk down to me or act as if I'm smoking as a fad. I really world live to sit.down and share a smoke and learn all i can about tobaccos and techniques. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

If you don't get any bites here, you might try a Craigslist post in the activities section.
Maybe there's a pipe club looking for pipers!
Best of luck to you. :puffy:

Toker is from Jax. What side of town are you on? I had good luck at the Tobacco Cove on Roosevelt. I hit it off right away with the guy who runs the place. But then again, I have a lot of gray on my head and look a couple years older than 24 :puffpipe:

Yeah I visited tobacco cove and they had a good selection but the man behind the counter seemed like any question I asked was an inconvenience. I went wanting 4 new blends and 2 pipes but walked out with 2 blends. I asked about pipes and was told to just get whichever one I wanted not answering any questions about system pipes or briar qualities. I just decided having a smoking buddie/ Mentor would be better. I want to try cakes and flakes but no one will tell me anything about them or where to get them locally.

I'm in St. John's County and work in east arlington area of jax. I'm pretty new to smoking pipes or should I say that I have rediscovered them.

East Arlington. I've heard that area has gone to hell, especially around Recency Square
When I was a kid, My grand-dad lived in University Park(it was still pretty nice back then). He used to let me tag along when he went to his tobacconist on Rogero Rd. It was a little place, but I thought it was super cool nevertheless.

Me and the wife used to live right across from regency mall but it was to unsafe for a pregnant woman. I live right next to the naval station on mayport rd.

I know island girl allows pipe smoking if you ever want to grab a beer and a smoke.

Island girl is an ok place to smoke. You can also smoke at Lynches Irish Pub. I am down with hanging and giving some pointer on smoking face to face. Let me know a good time to hang out at either spot. Yeah Gus is a little arrogant at Tobacco Cove, so is the other guy. If Edwards was not in such a bad situation with supply they have the right attitude for new pipers. I will send you gus my cell. I have free texting so hit me up for a get together time. My wife is a sagitarious so its easier to do a spur of the moment thing rather than plan anything.

Hi Jack!
Another Jax pipe smoker here. Been smoking since a pipe since I was 18 (my dad smoked and he helped me in the beginning), and I am now 50, so been at it a while. I also have spent the past 15 years experimenting with a variety of blends and types. I enjoy everything from straight Virginia/Burley to strong latakia blends to aromatics. Currently have a good variety in my home stock, including cakes and flakes. Agreed with tokerpipes that Gus at Tobacco Cove (TC) on Baymeadows is not the right guy for a new pipe smoker. Tom, the younger guy, is more patient and is a good resource. The TC on Roosevelt is a more friendly store, but they do not carry the variety that TC on Baymeadows carries. And, Edwards in San Marco was a great place. The guy there, Dino, definitely had the right attitude. Unfortunately, the owner died tragically right before X-Mas last year. Dino left, and I am quite sure they are just letting stock dwindle down so they can transition out of business. I would be up for getting together and can share with you what I know from my experiences in the gentle art of the briar. Years smoking does not mean that I know everything, but I have made a lot of mistakes along the way and can share the lessons learned from them. Sounds like we have a small group here, and it may be possible to transition that into an informal group that could get together. I have also experimented over the years with a variety of spirits - single malts, armagnac, cognac, etc, so it might be interesting to combine the two at some point.

There he is! 'Sup Toker?
I'll be back in Florida sometime in October to get my motorcycle (going to ride it to AZ for winter storage), and I would like to meet up with a couple pipers from my old stomping grounds. But as things often go, I can't promise anything. Usually when I'm down there, things go haywire and it's hard to escape for an evening.
Interesting, I never got the arrogance vibe in Tobacco Cove. I am also a cigar smoker, and we primarily discussed cigars and tobacco legislation when I was there. Perhaps that's why he was polite, we were discussing topics he was interested in.

I noticed that Gus will talk tobacco but mostly he is all about cigars. Tom is a more avide pipe smoker and has a more friendly attitude.
Any guys interested in meeting up check out Northeast Florida Southeast Georgia Meet up forum post.

I visited tobacco cove today and had a very pleasant experience there. Had some time to kill (in J-ville on business) and googled nearby pipe stores. Turned out I was 5 minutes away. Had a great pipe conversation. Picked up a new tamper...and a tin of 2007 Xmas cheer!
