I just saw the new Wes Anderson movie Asteroid City last weekend. Six word review: It's okay, but not his best. Anyway, one of the characters played by Jason Schwartzman smokes a pipe for a lot of the movie. Thankfully none of the other characters even mentions it. It's just there as a fact, which is probably about the most positive pipe portrayal that could be hoped for in the current age.

I can't identify the pipe, but it looks like a Peterson style full bent. His lighter is definitely a Nimrod Commander (the flip-top zippo-esque one). We never see him load the pipe, so who can say what's in it, but since nobody ever complains about the smell, I dunno... Captain Black? If I remember right, I think he uses the ubiquitous Czech style pipe tool.

One thing I can say is I don't think he received much coaching on how to do it properly because he tamped down, with excessive force, quite often. Like every six seconds every time they showed him puffing. And yet despite all that careful maintenance, his pipe kept going out. I wonder why...

Oh well, at least it wasn't a negative portrayal.
I recalled Schwartzman’s character in Asteroid City when watching The Phoenician Scheme. I like Anderson’s movies and thought Asteroid City was mediocre. I liked The Phoebe Scheme much more.

Monk Season 7, Episode 15, there's a magician character that smokes a pipe. Well, doesn't actually smoke it on screen. Also spoiler:
The existence of pipe tobacco in a particular spot ends up being a clue to the case and proof that said character was not out of town where he claimed to be.

The movie The Nephew was released in August of 1998. A young man takes his mother's ashes back to her hometown in Ireland to fulfill a promise he made her and to meet his Uncle. A cute PG-13 movie with great scenery and decent plot and well acted. Stars Pierce Brosnan and Sinead Cusack and the late Donal McCann. The Uncle Tony Egan played by Donal McCann who sadly passed away a year later in 1999 is seen smoking what appears to be a Peterson Pub pipe while talking to his nephew who is clearing rocks in a field. BUT ... The D18 was reintroduced in 2015 and became a regular shape in 2019 !!! This pipe looks like a 2019 Arklow D18. How is that possible when the movie was made prior to 1998 ??? Could it be just a House pipe and I am mistaken ? Or is it a sandblast shape 4 (309) Dutch ??? What do you think ?
