Here is what you need to know. The pipes that are narrow in the middle of the bowl smoke hotter than those that are fatter, like bulldogs, apples, Rhodesians. The more briar a pipe has, the cooler it will smoke but the heavier it will be. Those with longer stems smoke cooler than those with short stems. Long is at least 6 inches. Severely bent stems make the pipe lighter in the mouth, especially if they touch your chin. They also bend the smoke, probably making it less inclined to bite. But bent pipes can be a little difficult to clean. Very tall pipes produce a longer bitter endsmoke.

Pipes and their performance are a matter of physics. I don't know about coatings on pipes other than what's pretty when you buy it bubbles when it gets too hot. An open draw is cooler than a closed draw because, like a smaller water pipe/hose, you have to suck more air through the tobacco to get the same amount of smoke in your mouth and that increases the temp. of the tobacco. Thicker walls are cooler than thin walls - more insulation. There's probably something here about air turbulence when the tenon is too short for the mortise but that's above my pay grade. With all due respect to foggymountain, however, I do draw the line at "bending the smoke" and any resulting consequences.

Seems like I'm going to have to try out a bunch of different things and figure it out for myself... Sounds Ike a plan!
