Oh man, the pipe wasn't good. But I've used that canvass pipe roll plenty of times. It is surprisingly useful given the price (the pipe roll, not the pipe)

But, to your OP, I even tried the screens that came with the kit. I have a big bowl basket briar that has been relegated to goopy aromatics if I ever feel that urge (which is never these days). And the screen helped a bit as it left no dottle. But it is just one more thing to clean after a smoke.

Related: some time ago I bought a (very) inexpensive Kindle ebook about pipe smoking called "101 tips for the pipe smoker". One of the tips in the book was to use uncooked rice in the bottom of a bowl. Apparently it soaks up excess moisture in a manner similar to the meer chips. I tried that too... untill I sucked a rice kernel right through the stem. Lol.

Ahhh, the good old days.

Haha, I read that uncooked rice trick, too.
But, rice is too small. Coffee bean is bigger than tenon, it won't end up in your mouth.
And they smell good. You can try it.

lol They might be I wouldn't know lol. I bought a cheap Amazon pipe a year ago or whatever and it came with them. I never used them. I been wanting to get some Nording Stones though, is that what these screens are suppose to do?
they just create an air bubble bellow the tobacco so that moisture doesn't collect in the dottle. It's one of those funny things most people find useless but the people that like them seem to really like them. Also good for people that have problems sucking tobacco bits into their mouth. Seems to fiddly for me. And they get gunked up really quickly too. Generally too much work to fix a not real problem.

Yeah exactly. They get gunky, and I don't suck bits anyways; well I do occasionally, lol but I don't care. I cough them up obnoxiously like a cats hairball as my wife looks at me like she wants to puke. They might end up being more for her than me. lol

that is often how it goes. English blends would be more popular if wives couldn't smell.

How do you guys feel about pipe screens? I've never used them until recently because I got them for free. I personally don't care for them and don't seen the point. The screens im referring to are the flat disk that look like a screen from a door and the other one that looks like a screen from a door waded up in a cone shape that you drop in the bottom of the bowl.
When I worked at a pipe shop in the mall, we used to joke about all of the young men (it was always young men) who came in asking for pipe screens. There is no need for a screen in a tobacco pipe. In fact, use of a screen will mean you’re not building cake in the bottom of the bowl.
