How do you guys feel about pipe screens? I've never used them until recently because I got them for free. I personally don't care for them and don't seen the point. The screens im referring to are the flat disk that look like a screen from a door and the other one that looks like a screen from a door waded up in a cone shape that you drop in the bottom of the bowl.

Aren't those for use with non-tobacco devices ? 😏

I have meerschaum chips and Nording Keystones which I use if I don't have thevtime to dry my tobacco sufficiently.
There are also Sharrow Philtpads and meerschaum cones for use in meer pipes if you don't have a drilled silver coin.
lol They might be I wouldn't know lol. I bought a cheap Amazon pipe a year ago or whatever and it came with them. I never used them. I been wanting to get some Nording Stones though, is that what these screens are suppose to do?

Well I only used them. I mean heard of people using them in non tobacco pipes. But recently I heard someone on here uses one for his meerechaum as like a coloring agent or something. So idk anymore.

I think those screens are to stop bits of "herb" from getting in your gob 😂

Meer chips and Keystones are great for getting a drier smoke.
Also results in minimal dottle.

Given the price of tobacco in Oz, it's far cheaper to use those (they can be reused a few times before discarding) than getting rid of dottle 😄

Just place some coffee beans in pipe bowl. Then pack the bowl with you tobacco. Lit it, smoke it as usual. You can burn all the tobacco into ash. No more waste!

The only downside is there will be a lot of moisture in the bottom of bowl while smoking. You can insert a pipe cleaner into mouthpiece to aborsb the water.

I think those moisture is the main reason why it's so hard to smoke to the bottom of pipe bowl.

I meant why do you use the beans. I dont even know what the screens are for. To absorb moisture, heat, or what.

No it wasn't that one. But all those with the case kit and everything are really bad pipes. It was the same deal basically. I bought it a long time ago not knowing any better.
Oh man, the pipe wasn't good. But I've used that canvass pipe roll plenty of times. It is surprisingly useful given the price (the pipe roll, not the pipe)

But, to your OP, I even tried the screens that came with the kit. I have a big bowl basket briar that has been relegated to goopy aromatics if I ever feel that urge (which is never these days). And the screen helped a bit as it left no dottle. But it is just one more thing to clean after a smoke.

Related: some time ago I bought a (very) inexpensive Kindle ebook about pipe smoking called "101 tips for the pipe smoker". One of the tips in the book was to use uncooked rice in the bottom of a bowl. Apparently it soaks up excess moisture in a manner similar to the meer chips. I tried that too... untill I sucked a rice kernel right through the stem. Lol.

Ahhh, the good old days.

How did he color it with them? Like im picturing him taking it out of the bowl and drawing on the outside of the pipe like a C r a y on. I thought those pipes just naturally colored up with use.

Edited: Some how I wrote c r a yon and got a crazy smiley. lol

lmao! I might try it anyways, I like my pipe as cool as possible and I shove match sticks in the stem as suggested by a forum member. Works great and I dont think the rice can get through it and the screen lol.

As far as I know, a pipe screen is serve to prevent clogging, and avoid ashes from going into your lungs.
I use coffee beans instead. 'Cause I don't want to spend my money on screens.
And the beans work pretty well.

Another something that I see as an unnecessary item. I think screen is to filter out bits from ending up in your mouth. But that rarely happens. Before loading the chamber, I usually pick up the tobacco and drop them on the paper plate it's even drying on. Most tiny bit drop to the bottom, and bigger ribbons end up on the top. I load bigger bits first and they filter out the tiny bits. On rare occasions that tobacco end up in my mouth, I discreetly spit it out.
