Pipe(s) That You Will Never Smoke...

I have an extremely small, straight grained Eltang with a foot and a gold band. I have it sitting on my desk and will probably never smoke it. It's very small + I prefer it more as a display piece. It's the only pipe (out of the 100 or so I have owned) that I have never smoked.

You have any pipes that you just like to look at instead of smoking?

Of course. Some of my antique pipes are in too fragile a condition to be used, and a 115 year old unsmoked Barling companion set like this one:

I will not smoke because I like that it is as its maker made it.

I have plenty of vintage pipes that I do smoke.

A couple that transcend utility and achieved the status of art. Then there are a few that I only smoke on rare occasions because they deserve to be smoked but I don't want to beat the crap out of them.

I have 2 unsmoked pipes from 1910 or thereabouts. They have enough sentimental value to justify keeping as is. I may one day light up the Scottish meer, but the briar i will probably leave alone

My sister managed to get a 16 inch stem clay pipe back to the U.S. from Holland, and mailed it to me in N.C. from Chicago without breaking it, so I'm always afraid of breaking it, but I do smoke it on special occasions, though it gets dusty in the meantime. That said, now I will surely have to smoke it next.

No. Even my pipes that I deem objet de’ art still get smoked out of. I don’t think a coat of cake ruins their aesthetic so why not.

I currently have several pipes that I have not smoked yet. About 9 if I recall. Several have never been smoked by anyone yet. (I buy lots on secondary market)

I will most likely smoke each one at some point in time. The current delay is simply because I feel I'm still working on perfecting a few points. I want to feel like I'm "ready" for that special pipe when I pull it out.

And, I'm still exploring the various issues that go into a pipe working with a type of tobacco blend, at least for my style of puffing. Size, shape, depth of chamber; bent or straight, etc. - all need to be determined before I randomly stuff some tobacco in there and fire it up.

I want it to be perfect - damnit !

So I have several - but their time will come! And I've got a lightly smoked Randy Wiley coming perhaps tomorrow that I think I will smoke right away, as I want to try an "American" style (new-to-me) blend in an American artisan pipe.

No. I would not buy a pipe I wouldn’t smoke. They were made to smoke. If I want art, I’ll buy art. That’s like buying a car you won’t drive.

I've earmarked it for my birthday later in the year when I'll also be opening a couple of birth year cognacs.

And this Ivory pipe which I have not smoked for over 40years because of the extremely poor drilling. I bought it in the mid-70s when I knew nothing of what made a good pipe.

Pipes were made to smoke. Just like my forearms were made to shoot. No safe safe queens for me…I’ll let someone invest in them to sit.

Nothing wrong with it it’s just not my bag.
