This may not be an issue for smokers that only smoke 1 or 2 bowls a day, but for smokers who smoke a good several bowls a day, do you rotate after xx bowls or stick with the "first pipe of the day", all day, and rotate daily?

I just give at least 2 hrs of rest between bowls, but I keep same "pipe of the day" going and rest it x-number of days after that based on how many bowls where smoked. Also depending on how many blend types (English, Virginia, Aro) I have going throughout the day I might have three or four pipes going as well, cobs and Meers in the mix help out greatly if you don't have that many briars to do such a rotation

I smoke whatever, whenever. I may smoke same pipe 3 or 4 times in a row, or just pick another. I may smoke a bowl or 2 through out the day in a certain pipe and the same tomorrow. I do not deliberatly let a pipe sit or rest or oversmoke it. I just don't think about it. I just smoke what ever I reach for, whenever I feel for it

Same here.... smoke what I grab, don't think about it much, but I use a couple of pipe

cleaners during my smoke to keep the stem/shank dry.

I rotate daily. Unless I am going to smok a dedicated blend pipe aka Lat or Per. I run a cleaner through after each smoke in the same pipe. But lately I have just been smoking meers so sometimes I dont even rotate just a light cleaning.

Daily is how I'm doing it now with my few. I just realized I don't actually know why you're "supposed" to rest a pipe "x" days… guess I need to read up on that next. LOL

I normally smoke a pipe for one bowl and then let it rest a couple of days or longer. When I go out I will smoke one pipe for as long as I am out and if it is for 2-3 bowls, then I will let it rest for a week. I was told early on to let the pipes rest a decent amount of time, they will perform better. I don't remember why that is so but it is something I have always done and my pipes smoke pretty darn good.

I have two pipes for burleys, two for aromatics, two for Virginias, two for latakia blends, and a couple of all purpose pipes. So no matter what I feel like smoking, a pipe always gets at least one day off after being used.
That's easy to do because I don't smoke much - usually just one bowl a day, sometimes two.

Pipes tend to smoke better when they are rested and dry IMHO. That being said, i mostly grab and smoke. I dedicate pipes to categories of baccy, i.e VA,VAPER/English,Balkan/Aromatic. Cobs and meers i smoke whatever out of.

I am blessed enough to have two pipes for each day of the week and a half dozen cobs. Each pipe gets smoked 2-3 times per day and then rested til the next week when they come back up in rotation. Over coffee in the morning I clean yesterdays pipes. I am just now getting enough pipes to dedicate a couple to heavy Lat and Va/Pers and thanks to a member here I have a Radice that I only smoke my Balkans through. When I only had a few pipes I would smoke the hell outta one all day then let it rest at least a day. Best advice ever given to me in regards to this subject... Buy Cobs! :D

One good reason to let it rest is to allow the bottom of the bowl to thoroughly dry. You can wind up with a condition know as soggy heel where to look in bowl the bottom appears dry. However when you smoke it moisture comes out of the bottom pores of bowl and pipe tastes sour or bitter. Have known people who buy a pipe and smoke it until cake is so thick you couldn't get your little finger in it to tamp the tobacco or the bowl cracks. It's just how you want to define being a pipe smoker. There are rule of thumb guidelines that for each bowl smoked a certain number of hours downtime is necessary. I'm not the type of person who keeps that close a track of things so I normally smoke any given pipe just one day and have enough pipes in my rotation that each pipe rests at least three days. Has always worked for me but some are more particular, some less so. If your pipes smoke good to you they are rested enough, whatever that rest time might be.

I only smoke cobs so far, and since I go through 1-2 bowls a day max, I tend to use the same pipe with several hours spaced in between. (I also keep my pipes reserved for particular styles just to keep the flavours clean)
If I had a briar I'd probably be more particular about it, but I don't really rest my cobs for a day unless I stop smoking altogether, which happens a couple times a week.

I use 1 pipe all day long and smoke whatever I feel like in it(With the occasional pipe cleaning midway through the day). At the end of day, I just run a pipe cleaner through the stem and place on the rack to rest. About once or twice a month I will conduct a copious cleaning regime; otherwise that is all......

Since I have a sizable collection and I smoke about 6 -8 bowls a day,I use a different pipe each time I fire up a bowl. Each pipe rests about a week before I use it again.

is it just me or does anyone else feel the older the pipe the less it needs to rest? just seems like the newer ones i have i can't smoke more than a bowl before having to set them aside for a couple days.

I have a rotation system for briars which gives each about 4-5 days, minimum, between smokes. The meerschaums may be smoked up to twice a day, though a day or two to dry is better.
