I don;t know any hard FACTS. A lot of opinions, beliefs, etc. A new smoker is really bombarded with a lot of

polarizing opinions, and it would be nice if a lot folks would speak only from experience.
I remember researching a certain pipe maker. A lot of controversy associated with him.

One thing became evident; the folks who loved his pipes owned them. The folks who made

all forms of derogatory comments did not own them. Big lesson there.
Believing and knowing are so far removed from each other, that wisdom dictates we learn to separate the two, in what we read, and in what we say.

I inherited 5 Petersons when my father recently passed away, and in such a gungy rank condition, that I look it as a personal challenge to clean these biars up. Now the vulcanite is like black glass, the cake a respectable 2mm or so, and the bowls shiny enough. Anyway in cleaning these up I had such fun that I thought I might take up pipe smoking. That is only a couple of months ago now, so I am definitely a n00b, although I did have a few bowls with the old man whenever I got home from university on vacation; that was over twenty years ago!
My rotation (through English blends) has been 1-2 bowls late at night, one pipe per day. All seems well with these old pipes. So much so that I recently acquired two more estate pipes (a James Upshall and a Stanwell). I can't imagine any more than 7 being truly *useful* ('want'-ful, maybe:)), unless one smokes many different styles of tobaccos.
Just my £0.2. Apologies if this is otiose. As I say, I'm a newbie too... just one fortunate enough to suddenly have enough pipes to rotate.

stupendous - do you have pictures ?

maybe in another thread you can tell us details of how you did it
otiose ? on the contrary

as a new member you aren't expected to suddenly be blatantly otiose without cause

as you progress in posting you will learn to skillfully use otiosity as a tool to otiosely fling scorn upon those that willfully jest at your otiosness

never apologizing - for that is the cardinal sin of any serious otiose literary practitioner of otiosism

you know you have arrived at mastership when people say - you are full of it

I did not take photos of the process as I didn't know at the time I would get a little bit obsessive about things and end up smoking the pipes myself[1]. When the 'new' old pipes arrive, I'll document and post somewhere or other, remembering to return to this thread to post the link.
[1] I figured if smoking a pipe were good enough for one of the greatest minds of the 20th Century, it could do me little harm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80oLTiVW_lc

Myth or not I have always made an effort to rotate my pipes. I came to the conclusion that rotating pipes was a good thing all on my own observations and deductions rather than at the advice of another smoker. I only learned that this was a common practice among pipe smokers after I started doing it. I find that if I smoke one pipe repeatedly it tends to get a little gooey and smokes a bit hotter than usual muddying up the flavours. But that's just me.

was that guy a genius or what ?

how right can you be ?
now i know why all those stupid people seem so sleepy all the time, they need the answer slated to be placed in their memory by the double bond action of the slumbering trans while they are asleep
( sorry if my punctuation is a little off right now - i must have just woken up from a little nap while writing this )

I believe a pipe's job is to deliver the expected tobacco flavor without adding or subtracting
from that. I observed that to do that, the pipe needs to be dry. "Resting" accomplishes this. I
find that drying time is essentially a few days. A taste test is the real determiner.
If sweetening is done with a rum soaked pipe-cleaner, then that is another reason to allow
drying time.
I personally don't agree with exaggerated rituals (IE; unswerving 14 day lineups) performed to
insure "lifetime service" from a pipe collection, as I have occasionally read in posts. To me,
it is all about flavor, and my enjoyment. My pipes are merely expendable instruments to that
end.
Each individual will exercise their own regimen, but actual necessary drying time will always
follow the laws of physics.

my pipe says you are 100 percent correct and it is very disappointed at my failure to aid it in that accomplishment .
