Pipe Rest Question

Hi Everyone!

I have a question regarding these cast aluminum pipe rests we make that are awesome painted to look like mallards (see below). Should we let the bowl section where the pipe actually rests unpainted or use heat resistant paint? We've just been using direct to metal paint and allowing it to cure before shipping. No one has complained yet but I would appreciate some feed back just in case. I look forward to hearing your in put. Thanks!

A lining eg felt or leather will help protect the pipes

Thank you. We currently only make the one style pipe rest so I don't know that a sponsorship would be worth it for us but where can I get more information about becoming a sponsor in case we do add to that line?

That’s a cute pipe rest. Bear in mind that many pipe smokers are also collectors that are concerned about preserving the condition of their pipes. I would be mindful about any dyes on felt or leather that could potentially stain a pipe’s finish; I would think lining your rests with felt and leather that have no dyes would be a way to go.

Oh yeah, you have a point there. So we would need to go with something natural. Thanks for bringing that up.

I have been using these leather pipe rests for some years with absolutely no issues.
I’m sure most commercial quality leather would be fine for the job

I was actually thinking another newbie rest question. Well, nice rest. But metal? I wouldn't rest my more loved pipes on a metal rest. Only on stable leather or table top. Especially, not on metal rest with a sharp edge.

I have some old fashioned pipe rests with dogs/pheasants that are either metal or porcelain -- they are nice for display but for something I use all the time it is a little rounded at the top strip of leather that snaps together that came with a leather pipe roll I had made - it's basically been separated from that since I bought it and is always on the counter and goes out on the deck or in the garage (also have some of the thin Peterson ones about as well) - I don't really have a dedicated table or desk for "permanent" pipe use I would use while there and the metal ones I would always be trying to be too careful with.

My take on rests...there are two types. One for display the other for putting down the pipe in between puffs.... To do something like Im doing now while typing. I dont like metal for that. Honestly, what I use a homemade bean bag that sits by my keyboard. I dont have to aim carefully. nothing can be damaged. If you want it for use while smoking you could an added bean bag that sits the bottom. It would make the rest more user friendy and still maintain your look. Its hard to know exactly how big that is but you dont want too small or its clumsey to quickly use. Be sure to round and really smooth edges of the metal. Ive a couple of rests I dont use becuase they are just not convienient.

Its importat to remember that guys treasure their pipes and some pay a lot of cash for them. They need to be safe. A cool look is the start but not enough in itself.
