Been hard for me to find a good Pipe Rack. What I really want is a pipe cabinet. Shame that I really have no idea whatever happened to my grandpa's. Don't even know if they make em anymore that are of real wood.. Most I've seen are quite expensive and cheaply made. But they do look nice. What I've been thinking of is finding an antique cabinet that opens barn door style. Sanding it down and refurnishing it or if it looks good old leaving it as is. Then building the shelves and drilling holders inside. For cheap you could build an awsome pipe cabinet! Might take a try or two but it could be done. Any of you built your own pipe rack/cabinet? Any ideas? Maybe some of you even have a picture of your pipe rack/cabinet?

A friend of mine has a pipe cabinet made by Decature in the 70s. It has the "barn doors", sits on the floor and holds quite a few pipes. I would't have the thing if you gave it to me! Why? In order to find the pipe you want you have to get down on your knees and search with a flashlight. Something to consider before buying one...

I am currently going to through the R&D process to building my perfect pipe rack. To me is is all a matter of what you want for how much you want to spend, if someone doesn't make what you want than build your own! That being said here is a link to a great shop that builds some amazing pipe racks and cabinets....

no no, a small cabinet, to put up on a wall. Yes, it would counter productive to have them near the floor collecting dust. Not to mention the pain to drag one out!

Great Bubba! I like the idea of using rubber strips. Might build one simular and then mount in a small cabinet. Thinking I will pick up one of those older wood chissels at a second hand store and chissel out where the bowl rests. It could look like complete crap or maybe after staining, look nice and rustic.

I also have a hanging corner cabinet for the churchwardens. I will see if I can get a decent picture.

Both were lucky buys. I think the large one was 125 shipped. The small one I got for thirty as it needed some repair work.

Wood one similar to this one do?
100_0747.jpg

Got it on ebay a while back and I bet I saw 4 identical ones up for bid at the same time. It's walnut, made to hang on the wall and holds 22 pipes, holes for the stems on the bottom row and slots for the stems on the top row, (great for chuchwardens and long stems).

I picked this up for 3 bucks with the pipes over the summer. It holds 7 pipes and looks simple to reproduce.

All of those are nice :)) buck67,I like the brass on that one. I won one like that(all wood) at auction, one more small one on the way,50's art deco style. Sure they will treat me fine and when I do see one that is large or a cabinet and is not so far away as to make shipping extravegant.. then I'll make the jump. Right now, I'll be happy with the little dudes I got. I do agree with, Hacker, the author of, "The Ultimate Pipe Book". You should always purchase a rack that can hold more pipes than you currently own!
