I noticed, while examining my new Peterson, that the shining polish to it didn't extend to the bottom of the pipe where the nomenclature is imprinted. What is used to polish a pipe, and why wasn't the section bearing nomenclature unpolished?

Hi Sparrowhawk, I am fairly new and certainly do not know the answer but a Peterson 306 Ebony is next on my list and I would it would be great to see a photo of this area you are asking about if possible.

What is a "stummel"? I will make a point to purchase one of these cloths you mention when my bank account has a chance to recover from the terrible beating it's taken lately.

Hey roth, I was literally in the process of asking you what makes a pipe wipe a pipe wipe, when I thought "uuuh, I think I can figure this out.." Proceeded to smokingpipes.com - Dunhill pipe wipe - reading reading reading... "Ah, infused with a "protective silicon wax.".
I immediately realized a pipe wipe (why not a Dunhill for fifteen bucks?) is practically essential.

Renaissance wax with a soft cloth or towel and obsidian oil are the only two products used on my pipes. I find both products exceptional.

I wonder if Martin's Guitar Polish would work? This is the polish used for fine musical instruments.

Sounds like the same silicone impregnated cloth I use to wipe clean my chrome plated revolver. You can get them at any Mart-Mart (Wall-Mart, BI-Mart, K-Mart) for cleaning and polishing fishing rods and reels, and other sporting goods, just with out the Dunhill name and Dunhill price.

Sorry guys,
I am a bit of a heathen; however I have enjoyed smoking a pipe off and on for about forty years. One of the main reasons I joined this site was after browsing the forums for a while I am so impressed by the phenomenal pipe collections, the rare and exotic blends most of you guys smoke, the great tobacco reviews, the hints, tips and knowledge and most of all out of respect for the dedication you all exhibit for your hobby or perhaps better said passion.
I rub mine on my sleeve if it gets mucky.
No offence intended

Bill

Some Gun cloths are advertised as haveing silicone and essential oils, I would think maybe something to waterproof your stock? It might impede your pipes ability to throw off heat, in the oil industry silicone is used widely, stabilizer for oils, prevents them from foaming and therefore enforces the lubrication effect, what worries me again is the oils in a gun cloth, 15$ ain"t much to protect a nice pipe whatever you paid for it.

I bought a tube of the Brebbia Pipe and Mouthpiece Polish and I'm not impressed. Anyone who has had success with it please let me know your technique.

I'm with you Bill, I use no polishes or waxes. They just seem a bit "wrong" to me. I enjoy the "natural" beauty of a wood or finished wood without the shine. You've probably already noticed though, I'm a bit of a heathen as well.

Peterson's are subject to quality control issues. Been seeing it now for a couple of years. I hate to say it but I see too many of them pass through the shop that are sub par. For the money there are better pipes.

Roth- the Brebbia didn't shine up the pipe at all. In fact it seemed to dull the finish on an already satin finished pipe. Didn't do much for the stem either. Hmmm.

I use Burt beeswax on all my pipes. Place a good coat with your fingers then polish with micro fiber. If you have a pipe that has lost it's finish and is dull this will also bring out that grain and color of the natural briar. Also use it on the stems to help with oxidation.
