Number Six that is a beautiful Bari you have there sir.
Thanks Jim - it's a great smoker and a good looker too.
Jim, you do realize that the Pete collects disgusting tobacco juice and the cleaning of the pipe is a super pain in the ass? It creates moisture because of it's design.
This is a tough one, I am really on the fence about your argument Harris. On the one hand, there are plenty of times I have to run a pipe cleaner mid-smoke to stop excess moisture. If a System pipe works (and many swear that they do), it means (at least in theory) a dry smoke every time.
The clean up may be a bitch, but having a dry smoke might be worth it to some (and some say the cleanup isn't all that bad).
On the other hand, a dry smoke is possible, especially with a quality, high-end pipe.
Overall, I see your point, but personally I wouldn't mind having at least one System pipe (if only out of curiosity)

I would suggest a Peterson spigot but they are a bit pricey.
I've got a Peterson System that I've had now for maybe 20 years and it smokes great but I'm with Harris/Roth on this one. I think you should get a nice estate Caminetto or Radice.
Another good alternative is a Savinelli.

While true that Peterson's create a lot of juice in the well,
"A lot"? lol, maybe Harris is right after all, that does sound pretty gross!
No matter! Jim, hope you'll let us know your final decision anyway.

six I've always had a dry smoke with my system pipe and I rarely have to clean anything out of the system portion of the pipe. Maybe it's just the way I smoke.

I am with NumberSix here...

I usually have a pipe cleaner handy when I smoke... Don't always need it, but some times it becomes necessary.

I have been curious about the a system pipe. If it is a pain to clean but gives me a nice dry smoke. I guess I can deal with it.

If not... Happy birthday to me.

Either way I'll post up my results
Jim

I've been curious too, so more power to ya! They've been around for a long time and so they must be a good fit for many out there.
Can't get lazy on a Pete System
This I can believe!

I know there are plenty of guys who love their system pipes and more power to them, for me it totally skeeves me out thinking about a well of nasty disgusting tobacco juice in my pipe.
six, I am spoiled now that all of the pipes I have bought(29) in the last year plus never need a pipe cleaner for excess moisture. There are tons of pipes out there that have that feature if you know what to look for and you don't have to spend a fortune. The thought of a pipe creating moisture and juice just to be able to store it in the pipe makes no sense to me, why own a pipe that creates moisture where none would exist if the pipe had a different design. Now I totally get the idea that you can smoke the crap out of system pipe and maybe they are better for puffers rather than sippers, call me a purist but I honestly think if people took the time to learn the art of pipe smoking, there would be no need for filtered pipes and system pipes. These kinds of pipes seem gimmicky to me, and I truly believe that the pipe Gods frown upon them and make your tobacco smoke wet. lol
bryan, I have never chewed tobacco you are correct. I did smoke my cigars to the nub but was not a chewer. I once put some Red Man in my mouth for about 2 seconds before I spit it out, that was over 40 years ago, vile stuff. lol
