JPMCWJR, I am surprised at this advice. Not saying you're wrong at all, but I would have thought that the safest bet would be to leave the tin alone until you had to open it, then keep it at the perfect moisture to store, rather than smoke. Unless....do you get through 50g within a few days?

I think what he means is that if you dry out your tobacco to whatever moisture level you want, then store it as such, it will be ready to smoke whenever you remove it from the jar. It just cuts out a middle step.

I am paranoid about my tobacco drying out. I'd rather wait for an hour or so on pristine tobacco drying out than risk finding an entire tin is too dry.

But each to his own method. If it tastes good to you, it's not wrong!
To dethmutt, Latakia blends are incredibly popular, but so are Virginias and Virginia Periques. I think very few briarmen restrict themselves to only one section of the tobacco chart. The trick is to find the individual Virginias, Burleys etc that you like. I recently tried Early Morning Pipe for the first time and I really like it, specifically because it tastes so straightforward. It's the tobacco equivalent of Royal Lochnagar 12 year old. The best way to describe it is "good quality tobacco".

Doesn't sound that exciting, but if you smoke it, you'll know what I mean.

Having said that, HH OLd Dark Fired is has a "true tobacco taste", despite being nothing like EMP.

I am afraid to break it to you, but you have embarked on a very long journey, with quite possibly not an end in sight!

I certainly don't feel like a seasoned veteran and my second wind of pipe smoking started about 12 years ago.

Why not run a pot of coffee thru that tobacco flavoured filter ..
I once drank a nice cup of joe I brewed and it came out smelling like the rich pipe tobacco I had been pressing and flaked , the aroma transferred into the cup from my hands , it was nice .

Dry a whole tin, and when at perfect moisture level, jar all of it except the bowl you're about to smoke.

No, I take my time, and usually have 6-10 jars that I am then smoking currently. Yes, the tin remains unopened until I am ready to smoke some. Then once opened, I leave the top off for a day or two to let her dry down. All the time a hygrometer remains with the tobacco. Then I put the lid on, and let it all equilibrate overnight. Then check the moisture and if it's good, I know I have a couple of ounces ready to go.

No, all of us are not. There are some very vocal Virginia-only guys. Real men smoke latakia and VA's! Some even smoke aro's. Smoke what you like, and like what you smoke!

Happy - I can see where my post might indicate I was prepping for cellaring; was only prepping for smoking over the next month or two. (Along with a bunch of other blends)
