I am paranoid about my tobacco drying out. I'd rather wait for an hour or so on pristine tobacco drying out than risk finding an entire tin is too dry.
But each to his own method. If it tastes good to you, it's not wrong!
To dethmutt, Latakia blends are incredibly popular, but so are Virginias and Virginia Periques. I think very few briarmen restrict themselves to only one section of the tobacco chart. The trick is to find the individual Virginias, Burleys etc that you like. I recently tried Early Morning Pipe for the first time and I really like it, specifically because it tastes so straightforward. It's the tobacco equivalent of Royal Lochnagar 12 year old. The best way to describe it is "good quality tobacco".
Doesn't sound that exciting, but if you smoke it, you'll know what I mean.
Having said that, HH OLd Dark Fired is has a "true tobacco taste", despite being nothing like EMP.
I am afraid to break it to you, but you have embarked on a very long journey, with quite possibly not an end in sight!
I certainly don't feel like a seasoned veteran and my second wind of pipe smoking started about 12 years ago.
