There have been many discussions in the past on the forums about dedicating certain pipes to certain styles, or formulations of tobaccos. In this case, it seems the pipe may have chosen which type of tobacco to dedicate itself to.

To riff on his last sentence in the article, I am also fine with this bit of pipe lore remaining a mystery. If pipe makers knew what made a piece of briar more receptive to virginia or Latakia blends, they would sell them as such. We would be comparing Savinelli’s Virginia pipes to Peterson’s Virginia pipes. I’m sure one will be found to do better with empire virginias. People would be dedicating pipes even more selectively than they do now.

It sounds tiresome. I’m much happier with each pipe coming with a large helping of serendipity.
