Pipe Mud

Does anyone know from where I could secure some Pipe Mud?

I make my own from hardwood ash, water, and a little sodium silicate (waterglass). No real "formula" for it, just trial and error. Not sure that anyone actually markets it.

You can use most ash and water. I just use fireplace mortar.

Works fine. I've even had good results with cigarette ash. Just make sure to remove any tobacco bits.

Cigar ash is also a good source, I think CE may even have recommended that to me in the past.

Yes, I heard that also. But as I can't afford cigars, here in Oz - $20 for a very modest sized stogie - I'll work on the tobacco ash.

Tobacco ash will work well - just put through a fine sieve to eliminate bits of tobacco first

Add water drop by drop !
You don’t need much - just enough to get a workable paste
You can “shape” and remove excess with a bent over cleaner.

And allow lots of dry time

I have a pellet stove. The ash is uber fine. Makes great mud and so far lasts

If you've got a mortar and pestal you can make most ash as fine as you need. You can achieve the same in an ashtray with a tamper.
