It is a rainy day here in Sconnie so I thought I might do a little pipe maintenance on a few pipes. Does anyone know of a pipe mud alternative that does not use cigar ash? I am not a fan of cigars so I am wondering what else I could use in place of it?

I use fireplace ash from wood, which is much harder and stronger than cigar ash. It ends up with a satisfying metallic "clink" sound when you tap it with a metal tamper just like cement.

Just when you think you've heard it all...What is pipe mud, and what are you using if to do?
Thanks

So how do you place it in the bowl? I would think of rolling a small ball then dropping it down and doing your cosmetic work with your tamper. I looked at my pipes last night and 3 of the 4 could use some mud.
