You also have to be objective: how many pipes do you have? And, how many blends do you have?

I've a modest stash of over 35 different blends, mostly aromatics. Yet I've a paltry collection of ~20 pipes. Could I dedicate a single pipe for each blend? .... I have no choice but to smoke a different blend in the same pipe.

Also, some like to smoke the same thing over and over and over and over... **I** am not interested in boredom: I always want to smoke something different than what I had last time—again this necessitates using the same pipe for a different blend.

Some people dedicate, some don’t, there’s no right or wrong, it’s a personal preference. In time you might also find some blends just seem to taste better in certain pipes, for this reason people will dedicate a pipe to certain blends.

Don’t smoke a lot of the same blend in a pipe that will Ghost, usually one bowl at a time if you are worried. If you get any Ghosting, typically smoking a non Ghosting blend, like Burley or Latakia forward blends, you can eventually smoke it out.

I don't bother to designate pipes for several reasons. I don't smoke Lakeland aromatic blends, which are he worst ghosting offenders. I have a lot of pipes, so my rotation is large, so I don't get much flavor carryover for that reason. And most of all, I don't build cake, so there is less of a carrier for residual flavors. I scoop out the ash after each smoke, and after running a pipe cleaner though the airway, I use an abrasive paper towel to remove all the loose material in the chamber. I have never detected any residual flavors from aromatics, Latakia, Perique, or heavy strong burleys or dark fired. Also, this method retains the diameter of the chamber on a permanent basis. Cake building is a fine old tradition, and many enjoy it. But it's not for me.

it’s your pipe you can smoke whatever you want in it, that being said some blends simply do not play nicely with others. Since everyones taste experience is a bit different you’ve gotta figu out what you like and what crossover is acceptable to you.
