Unsure if the lighter fluid would cause an unpleasant odor or taste. Any input would be appreciated.

Make sure to use the Zippo fluid, I get no flavor from that. I got an unpleasant flavor from the Ronson/Ronsonol fluid (but that was years ago).

I love my Zippos, they work great in the wind. If you send Zippo your regular insert and ask for a pipe insert, they will send both back, so you don't have to get one with a pipe insert initially. Some people use the regular insert and pull the wick out a bit more.

Also, you don't want a Zippo with a plastic decal or panels on the side, since when you tilt it for the pipe these can melt. Too bad, because I really like the scrimshaw ones.

I have a Zippo butane insert that I use for cigars. Do they have one for pipes as shown in my pic (Thunderbird)?

If you send Zippo your regular insert and ask for a pipe insert, they will send both back. This one uses their fuel, not butane. I find the Zippo fuel tasteless (unlike the Ronson/Ronsonol). You'd want to pull the wick up higher than in this pic.

Over decades, I tried many, many different butane and lighter fluid lighters, and the best of all of them, bar none, is a plain old Zippo pipe lighter for ease of use, reliability and practicality. Some poo-poo them as "tasting funny", but I've never had an issue with the lighting mixture overpowering the burning tobacco leaves. Your mileage may vary.

I have a Dissim inverted flame lighter that I like quite a bit. It’s been completely reliable, and easy to purge and fill. It has an angled flame, and lots of distance between the flame and button, but that’s the only real advantage over a $1.59 Bic. I purchased it for $50, and frankly I don’t think it was worth it. Dissim recently raised the price to almost $90, so definitely not worth it.

people don't use them correctly and then say they're crap. Zippos are great.
