My Peterson does yeoman like duty. It's an Old Boy clone, as are so many logo-ed and labeled lighters, and works well outside when properly shielded. I just have a tough time finding the softer flints in my neck of the woods.

Six how do you think the Connaught holds up in the wind? Fantastic looking lighter been thinking of getting one for a while now.

Dunhill Rollagas is a little out of my price range. And I do smoke outside on occasion so the Xikar Pipeline and Corona Old Boy might not work.

My lighter of choice is a Bic.

roadqueen, I have used a bic in the past and its a backup lighter for me. But the angle isn't ideal and my thumb tends to suffer the most.
I think I am leaning more towards a Zippo and Colibri Connaught looks like a great lighter too (nice price). I'll grab a DJeep today till then.

Thanks.

I just use matches. Being a chemist, i can easily notice solvents. However, if it's really windy i'll use a cheap Ronson torch lighter. It's kinda crappy, but i didn't pay for it. I found it somewhere. You know, like you do. I should probably invest in something a little more fancy.

Yep, woodsroad she is the one. A bit 'blingy' for my taste, but one of the 'seven people watching per hour' will snag it, at an excellent price !!

It does struggle a bit in the wind, but really no better or worse than my zippo. With all of its features and low cost, it's tough to beat. Has some nice heft to it too. All in all, a great value.

I'm partial to Zippo's. With or without a pipe insert. Never noticed a fuel taste or smell on the tobacco. I've been eying other lighters so this thread has peaked my interest.

Flakey sez:

Me too. I had my eye on a very nicely patina'd (is that a word?) silver plate Rollagas, but couldn't bring myself to buy it.

It went for $75 or so. That's two and a half pounds of Balkan Supreme.

@woodsroad, that's more (but not quite!) like it. It will still be here, and working, when 10 llbs of Balkan and 50 Bics have bit the dust !! LOL

If you are not willing to spend 100 for a Corona Old Boy then I suggest sticking to a Bic. Xikar lighters break all the time, yes they have a lifetime warranty but who wants to send them back 3-4 times a year. Colibri are junk, Lotus are junk, the cheap Old Boy look a likes are junk. Zippo lighters are good for real windy conditions but their flame is unwieldy and are a bitch for the end of the bowl and they can make a mess of the rim of your pipe.
Dunhill lighters are nice but they tend to blow seals and are not cheap to fix. I have tried pipe lighters from many different companies and nothing beats an Old Boy in my opinion. I also have no trouble using it outside in normal conditions. even use it at the beach by just covering my head with a towel. I have had mine for 13 years now and it has out lasted every other pipe lighter I have bought.

Another vote for the Old Boy here. I say save your money and get the best.
I've had my Pewter (model with the shape chart on it) Old Boy for close to 14 years. It's beat to hell, scratched up, and still fires every time. It's lit every pipe I've smoked since I got it and never looked back.

One day Harris I will definitely own a Corona Old Boy, they are beautiful and I believe they are worth the money - but I will say, for right now, my Colibri really has been first rate (maybe I did get lucky!)
