Hello everyone,

I'm completely new to the world of pipes, as I've only recently been given my first pipe by a friend of mine. The one problem I'm having is that I can't for the life of me work out what brand and model the pipe is. It has the word 'Club' on it, but the only finds so far have been 'Parker Jockey Club' or 'Canadian Club'. I've used pipedia, and those other awesome sources of information, but alas, I haven't had much luck. Is there anyone out there that can help me with this? Here are a few pictures of the pipe:

Many thanks in advance

Your pipe has silver hallmarks from Birmingham:

So we can date it to 1910,

certainly an old pipe!
More investigation may uncover the identity of "RJ",

but the records are slim and often it's a shot in the dark.
I find it interesting, and I love the stamping with crossed polo thingies or whatever they are.
So,

we can say that this is French made pipe but imported for the English market with the silver being added in England --- and that was most usually the case with British pipes at that time.
Congrats,

it's a nice looking old survivor!

Many thanks for the information, mrlowercase & dmcmtk,

I thought it was much younger than that! I'll have a root around to see if I can find anything related to the 'RJ' stamp.

Thanks again.

There is an RJ tentatively identified as Reuben Jordan, but whether that's compelling is unclear to me.

Not much on this one. Who Made That Pipe? give the following possibilities:
La Bruyere 1911 - France

Civic, Ben Wade, Dunhill (unlikely any of these) - England

E. Deguingand - England
The problem with Who Made That Pipe? is that the column representing "maker or seller" sometimes has a model name rather than either maker or seller, so any attributions need to be taken with a grain of salt.
The RJ is probably not Reuben Jordan, as his makers marks are for Chester and London, and the frame around his initials isn't an oval, but a rectangle inside a lozenge:

I did locate this stamp on this site:
http://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Makers/Birmingham-R.html
but there is no name attached to it.

This is incredibly interesting information. I had no idea you could extract so much detail from the stamps.
I've started reading about the bands on pipes, and how they are mostly used for repair; however some sites say they are also used for decoration.
Thanks for the feedback.

When you remove the stem, do you see a crack at the end of the stummel? It's unusual for repair bands to have stamps like that. I'd guess the pipe was originally sold with that silver band.
