This is kind of long, but I've a couple rookie questions...

Is this a good "starter" kit for a serious beginner, and am I missing anything? I purchased an Old German Clay- Markus Fohr Cutty - to test out new samples, a Missouri Meerschaum - The Shire Cobbit - corn cob for daily/multiple times per day use around the house, an AKB Meerschaum - Carved Bearded Skull - for weekend relaxing, and a Rossi - Rubino Antico 8614 - for my nightly, pre-bedtime bowl/on the go bowl.

I've also picked up a bamboo tamper that kind of tapers/"sharpens" to serve as a light reamer/scraper, various stem and bowl cleaners and polishes, pipe cleaners, a long brush, a leather tobacco mat, and some wax. I didn't purchase a lighter, as I'm going to use wood matches when home, and my Zippo on the go (I know, I know - some say that this fine, others say it'll taint the flavor; I'm going to figure out for myself if it works for me, though).

I heard that the little, traditional clay pipe is optimal for trying new flavors - as it will never ghost on me - to fully experience the flavor in its purity. Same as with the Meerschaum - but I want to handle this one with special consideration, and less-than-regular use so as to not gunk it up with hand oils, dirt, and etcetera. Is that being to "paranoid", though? Also, it came "pre-stained" on the exterior of the bowl. Will it still color seeing as how it colors from the inside out, and should I still wax it?

For the cob, I've read they ghost easily, I've read the don't ghost at all. I do plan on using this pipe as my daily and go-to pipe for my introduction to pipe smoking so that I may become well versed in packing, lighting, and cadence, and it will have aromatics and non-aromatics smoked through it. However, if I start the day with a certain blend, should I stick with that blend all day, letting the cob rest over night before switching up blends? Will, say, smoking an aromatic around brunch followed by a Virginian blend mid afternoon have noticeable flavor colliding? Ghosting on this one is actually kind of desired, so I can get an idea of the "whats and hows" of ghosting/mixing/pairing blends.

Lastly, the plans I have for the Rossi - obviously, a briar - is to use it nightly while reading. Unlike the cob that will have just about every tobacco I buy ran through it, I'm looking for suggestions on how I should approach minimizing ghosting on my briar. This Rossi is my first "take smoking seriously" briar pipe, so it's my training wheels that will lead up to a Savenilli and Nording finding their way into my rotation. My plan for it is to use both aromatics and non aromatics - choosing one bowl of one or the other right before bed each night. Ultimately, I will have one briar for aromatics and one for noon aromatics a few months down the line.

If you powered through all this verbose rambling, I thank you, and I welcome your advice and comments.

Have a cheap pipe for Capt black cherry and grape. I was Givin a bag of each, that pipe is beyond ghosted. That cob is haunted.
Honestly you're on a better start then I was. My son is starting and doing the over researching what pipe for this blend what tobacco for that. I told him something I was told, enjoy the tobacco 1st. Then worry about the rest.

I've read the don't ghost at all.
All pipes can ghost, but it's rarely if ever permanent.

take smoking seriously
Never take smoking seriously, it's supposed to be relaxing. The more you think about it the less enjoyable it becomes.

This is just one man's opinion. Screw clay, screw cobs. Go buy yourself a 100-150.00 Savinellii. Buy a tin of Capstan Blue Flake and a tin of Peterson Navy Rolls. Then read and watch everything you can about flake tobacco so you learn what it is like to smoke top of the line tobacco. Screw smoking the cheap stuff. Learn the cube cut system, learn the fold and stuff methods. I always say go big or go home. Why waste money on crap pipes with crap tobacco. If you have trouble then ask me or many of the other guys on the site who know what they are talking about. Don't ask rookies who know nothing about the art of pipe smoking. Ask an expert and learn from the best. Also go to tobaccoreviews and read reviews from jiminks and pipestud. Smoke a blend and if you feel like your tastes are similar find other blends that you are similar too. The first thing you need to know is patience.

Pipe smoking is a difficult task and no one picks it up in the first 2 hours. It could take a year or more or it might take way less time if you hook up with the right people. I have been smoking for over 20 years. I smoked a cob for about 20 minutes and then threw it away. It was a piece of crap. You want a nice pipe that smokes cool and dry then get a good pipe. My first pipe was 155.00 and it smoked cool and dry from the get go. That pipe gave me a baseline for all other pipes. It showed me what a good pipe should smoke like so if I got a lemon(yes it happened a few times) I knew it was a crap pipe. You will get tons of people who say buy a cob, don't believe them.

It takes practice to get things right - packing, lighting, tamping, cleaning. Having said that, I've learnt more in the past 2-3 years about pipes, tobaccos and pipe smoking since I discovered this site and TobaccoReviews, than my entire 1st fifteen years smoking a pipe.

And I'm enjoying my pipes and tobacco a whole heap more.

Just beware of PAD and TAD

I haven’t stopped denigrating those hillbilly cobs, but I have stopped slapping them out of peoples faces that I see smoking them.
Pipesmoking is very serious. It’s probably too hard for most of the people who try to smoke them, so they come here. Why just last year a guy wasn’t able to smoke for two weeks because he had no idea how to open his tin. Quite a few guys have to ask how to get the tobacco into the pipe. Some have no idea what to use to light their pipes…. then it gets even harder. Breathsmoking has killed more men than the Hoover dam. They forget to keep breathing. It’s sad. And serious. Very serious. I’m probably the most serious person here, because I don’t want to see all of these men die because of ignorance.

I’m dead serious. But, to be honest, I didn’t read the OP. I just read the shorter posts below yours, because it was too long, and I’m too serious to be spending so much time reading. Did you ask about Captain Black Grape? I don’t think they still make that.
What was your question again? puffy

I've been smoking pipes for about 25 years. I used to have a collection of high end briars. Sold them all and only smoke cobs now. Briars seem to add something to the taste for me that cobs don't. I get a much better taste from any blend with a cob, and they smoke cool for me. Some guys will only smoke clay pipes. Some only Meerschaums. Some only cobs. Some only briars. Some guys will smoke various combination's depending on the blend. It's really all about your personal taste. Try them all and see which one(s) work for you.

I'm of the mind that when starting out, variety is the best way to go. Find out what you like.

I do think it is important to have at least one cob in your collection. Things I'd rather use a cob for than a $150 briar:

1. Learning how to manipulate the flame to not char the rim of your pipe (when learning to smoke a pipe). I'd be mortified if I spent $150 on a pipe only to ruin the rim in the first month.
2. Giving a newbie a pipe to try. I am often asked what smoking a pipe is like when hanging out with friends. I give them my corncob so they can try. I love my buddies but if they dropped, burned, or broke a $150 pipe, we're having words.
3. Inclement weather - I'm not smoking a nice briar in the rain, or while fishing, or while walking through the forest. I made this mistake once in Nottingham forest and dropped a dunhill. No damage, but my heart sure did skip a beat.
4. Pipe cleaning day - if I am resting my briars after a cleaning, I reach for a cob.
5. Ghosting - I don't let stuff like Ennerdale touch my briars.

As for meerschaum. Some folk like the discoloration that happens over time, some don't. If you want to minimize it, use a glove when handling it. It will prevent oils from your skin from getting into the pores in the coral and will keep your pipe white for much longer.

Hi, you're in the right place to pick up a lot of information so I won't add anything. Just to say you're doing a lot better than I was when I was a rookie 14 years ago. I bought a cheap pipe that I no longer have. I didn't know what to smoke or how to smoke it, how to clean a pipe, just absolutely nothing, but I knew Harold Wilson, ex-prime minister used to smoke Condor, so I bought some of that, and it seems incredible silly now but I used to smoke that at 6 in the morning when I got up for work. My flatmate at the time would laugh and say " Every time I hear that lighter click you start coughing. " Boy, was I ever green !

Same year I started pipe smoking.
Yep; I was on a class trip to England, and my English-Lit teacher was a pipe smoker. I was fond of those aromas, so I stopped in a London tobacconist, got a nice briar, a pouch, and some tobacco.
Following year, while in College, I’d stop in Iwan Ries almost every week. Those fellas REALLY improved my pipe game.
Fun guys to talk to, helpful, and a wealth of knowledge. Plus the selection at IRC just couldn’t be beat. * I’d peruse their Estate drawers and ogle over the magnificent pieces. Really built up my rotation that way, also learned refurbishment.
Also helped me to avoid trouble when I’d walk from Water Tower to the train. People usually avoided me like the plague, and the one time a dude tried to mug me by the Merchandise Mart, I flung hot ash in his face.

I believe the late, great, Tony Benn smoked St Bruno flake. He was Minister for Industry under Wilson, I wonder if they ever swapped tobacco, lol.
