I like smooths and blasts. I also like when a maker shows originality in his work as is the case with this Paul Tatum volcano that looks like a volcano. Excellent grain being transitioned from smooth to blast. Good smoker as well.

I much prefer smooth pipes over all others though I do like the occasional sandblast if it is done well. As for finish I do rather like a high gloss though I do have some matte finished pipes that look great as they are.
What I detest are those mainly smooth pipes that have random gouges taken out of them. They look bloody awful. The only reason I can think that this is done is because of flaws in the briar. But if this is the case then why not rusticate the entire pipe and have done with it?
Another dislike is figural pipes, meerschaum excluded of course! I own a few that were in estate bundles. I have an American Indian, a bull with horns made from crab claws (I kid you not) and an elephant! I never even bothered cleaning them up, they just look so cheap and tacky
Regards,
Jay.

I'm entranced by smooth pipes with great grain, though these appear most spectacularly in way-high-end pipes. Likewise, sandblasts on the right pipes have both visual and tactile appeal. I appreciate both those deep lavish blasts that bring up ribs of grain and the subtle intricate blasts where the shallow grain is lightly shown. Sometimes rustication seems low on the totem of finishes, covering flaws and not revealing the grain. But I have various rusticated and partially rusticated pipes where the finish is carried off with real art, and i fully respect that and enjoy the texture and individuality of it, even on some factory pipes. It depends so much on the pipe and the craftsmanship. My one Bob Hayes pipe, a straight Dublin with a bamboo shank, has a rusticated bowl, and is one of the best on the rack. I couldn't settle on a favorite; it depends so much on the pipe.
