Briar pipes are finished in smooth with stain showing grain, smooth high gloss with little or no grain showing, sandblasted, rusticated, unfinished smooth or rusticated or sandblasted ... what'd I forget? Do you have favorites? Do you only buy one finish? I find that finishes on pipes are like colors on cars. Certain models of cars look great, but only in certain colors -- a red model of a brand might look great and a white looks sheepish and lame, or the other way around. I do like the tactile aspect of having blast, rusticated, or carved briar. What are your ideas about finishes? Do you sometimes like the finishes you don't favor in general? Okay, I'm finished, but how do you like your pipes finished?

While I like most finishes, i very much like seeing the grain of the briar, enhanced by the finish. My favorite would be a gloss finish, maybe over proper stains that bring out the grain.

I prefer smooth finishes with a contrast stain. I've never been a big fan of rustication, and normally don't like sandblasted either, but there are a few blasts by certain makers that I love and hope to have one day.

I like best smooth briar with beautiful grain and a simple oil-rubbed and waxed finish. A close second is ring grain sandblast, but I'm very picky about the ones I like. Interestingly, most of my favorite sandblasts in my collection (in terms of appearance) are older mid-grade pipes -- Kaywoodie Thorn, Weber, and Danet.

I overwhelmingly prefer sandblasted pipes. I have all finishes in my collection, but there is something tactile about sandblast that I really appreciate.

Black and tan. (Black as contrast) Tan the natural briar color. Smooth. Light, diluted shellac (think French Polish) wash buffed down with two buffed coats of Carnuba wax.

Craig, When Kaywoodie made the Thorn, they were not mid-grade pipes. They were considered top of the line and actually cost more than Dunhill. I'll stack pre-WWII Kaywoodies against almost any pipe made at the time.

Yup, no doubt I'm a Weaver blast fan.

Hmmm. Actually six of my seven Weaver's are blasts. The only reason he didn't blast the fugu blowfish, though I asked him to, is because he said the grain wouldn't let him. After seeing it, I agreed.

I like to mix it up a bit. I love that mine are so different from each other. Lately I've been really liking the grain in smooth Morta - and I like they way they smoke as well. Have to say those Weavers look pretty awesome.

Just think, before he started carving it, I requested it to be blasted!
I think he made the right call
I too like the look of smooth morta over blasted.
Morta is one that I actually prefer the look of blasted over smooth, but I have seen some smooths that were extremely nice as well.

He sent pics of the grain before staining, and it was beautiful then. Blasting was definitely not in order for that briar block!
