rigmedic, I have to +1 everything you said. I've noticed the same with Virginia blends as well. But of late, I've also done back to back on some of my favorite Orientals and I find that smoke to be somewhat improved. Can't quite put my finger on why. A third of my collection I smoke with the the Savinelli balsa filter, and I also replace them at 3 smokes.
In the past I used to scoff at filters, but I've since changed my tune. Don't get me wrong, some of my non-filter pipes smoke beautifully, but I really like Savinelli's, and for the money I find them a great pipe that smokes well with the filter since it was designed that way.
