I am fairly new to pipe smoking, having been smoking for only a year. I have 3 pipes (Peterson, Silver duke, and Whitluck) and the Whitluck and Silver Duke are ones that were sold with filters.

Do I need to add the filters to these pipes? Will it affect the pipe or my health if I don't use them? Why does the Peterson not require a filter but my Whitluck and Silverduke does? I feel like I can smoke them without a filter but because they came with a filter but I don't want to mess the pipe up if that is a possibility.

Go filter-less - its quite liberating. You should adjust the pack on a pipe drilled for and smoked without a filter. There is more air so would require a slightly tighter pack. All of my Savs are sans-filter but can take one and they smoke perfectly well. Never had any issues.

Disclaimer: I do not use filters

The simple answer is NO.
You do not have to use filters with your pipes
But not using a filter will affect the draw
You may have to pack a bit tighter so that the draw is not too open

Will it affect my health if I don't use them?
ALL tobacco usage has well-documented health implications.

Not all filters are equally effective at reducing toxic material from the smoke.
Paper and balsa filters reduce moisture mainly.
Activated charcoal filters would be more effective.

Your choice to continue smoking. Or not

I don't like filters. They always cause a moisture problem for me.

Larry Roush told me to just use lots of pipe cleaners. lol

About health, filters take out some of the ingredients in tobacco, but you may smoke more to make up for that, bear in mind. I rarely use filters, maybe only for pipe shows or shops, where I might smoke more than usual.. I am a moderate smoker, usually a bowl a day, sometimes none.

You'd be surprised. Last time I saw a doctor, they asked me how much I drank. I said fairly light, just one beer a day. Apparently, that's moderate alcohol consumption. 😳

I'd imagine to doctors today, having one cigarette a year or one bowl of pipe tobacco a year makes you an extremely heavy smoker.
