Roy Ricketts loves meerschaum pipes, although his admiration for them is purely on aesthetic grounds. "Disgusting habit, pipe smoking," he sniffs.
Guess what moron? Without that "disgusting habit", the objects of your desire wouldn't exist.
What a stupid jerk.

And I suppose he collects cars which are not meant to be driven, and has a wife whom he doesn't........
Well, you get the idea.

I commented on the article, but I will be surprised if it gets accepted.
I stopped reading after the "Disgusting habit...". That's like collecting women's underwear because they're pretty and lacey, but you hate women that wear them. I smoke a pipe and this guy is an idiot. But those pipes are gorgeous.

I am the member who collects pipes but does not smoke. My dad smoked pipes and I collect them in his memory.
I always liked the smell of the tobacco my dad smoked.
I enjoyed seeing some the pipes in the article but I do not like the comments from the guy. He should not degrade something that he does not partake in.
I am proud of the pipes in my collection. Many of them, I have had commissioned. I also have decided to sell some of my estate pipes so they can be used by others rather than just admired by me.

Doug I think it's great you collect pipes no matter the reason and whether you smoke them or not is your decision, but unlike this guy you aren't putting people down for their choice to actually use the object as it is intended.

Well that's interesting. If you don't like the "habit" then don't buy the pipes. Find something else to collect.
Didn't someone report that the executive in charge of the Dunhill line of pipes doesn't like smoking either and also finds smoking distcusting.

The pipes are very lovely, he has quite an eye for them. I am all for, preserving these bits of art, and I have to respect the man for his choices. Doesn't mean I agree with them. But there are people who collect cars and do not drive, and people who cook but do not eat their own cooking. Seems a shame to miss out on one aspect of a subject in favor of another, but that leaves more tobacco for the rest of us.

There are all kinds of nuts out there. Reminds me of a guy I once met who participated in Civil War enactments but admitted to being a draft dodger.

Well, his pipes are great works of art. I just don't agree with his comment though.

I just commented this on the article:
Nice pipes but this guy has no idea what he is talking about. Meerschaum does not color because you “drool” into the pipe. In fact that is the last thing you want to do when you smoke a pipe! The meerschaum colors from the oils and smoke of the tobacco as it is absorbed into it. Also, if I was to collect something it wouldn’t be the implements of a habit I found to be disgusting. Very strange!

I have nothing against those that collect pipes, but refrain from smoking them. If collecting them brings you enjoyment, great. I even think some antiques are better preserved than actually used. With that being said, I find it disgusting that he would make such an arrogant and ignorant comment. Doug, I thank you for having the right attitude.

I can see collecting pipes as works of art but not smoking them. Part of the pleasure of pipes is their

visual enjoyment for sure. I find it curious that someone would find the "habit" "disgusting" if they

haven't partaken. He seems to have an especially vivid, slobbering notion of what it's like. Now playing

the coronet is pretty spit prone, and there are spit valves to help alleviate the problem, and oil to keep

the valves moving. I presume he finds all brass and woodwind music disgusting as well, since there is

a salivary flow with that. It does raise questions about his observational powers and perhaps his

intelligence. But each to his own; maybe there is an audience for this sort of thing. He probably doesn't

like steak, since that really involves the salivary glands in an abundant way.

It is my personal believe that everything should be used the way it's intended to.

So I intend to smoke all my pipes.
Without that "disgusting habit", the objects of your desire wouldn't exist.
Pretty much it.
