If you had a chance to design the perfect pipe case, what elements would you include in it? I am talking about a pipe case “for the day”. Not the monster master case you pack for a 2-week holiday, just the walk-about day pouch. How many pipes? Storage for cleaners? Place for a lighter? Tamper? Would you carry your day supply of baccy in a tin? Leather pouch? How big would it? Would it fit in a pocket?

The reason for all those questions is this: I make my own leather goods and have, over the years made a number of various cases, but none of them “hit the spot” with me. So, I am currently trying to design the ultimate day pouch for the smoker on the go. A pouch rugged enough to fit into a pocket of your fishing vest and yet elegant enough to bring with you to the pipe club meeting.

Any ideas would be welcomed….

Regards

2 pipes, slot for the tamper, place for your lighter and the ability to hold a tin of tobacco. The pouches for tobacco seem a little useless, id rather have a case thatcould hold one round or square 50gm tin.

Quite frankly, I have a lot of pipe bags, and the one I like the most is the Peterson's Deluxe 2 pipe bag. It has everything I want, but here's where I would change it:

I agree with @brdavidson: Tobacco pouches seem useless to me. Get rid of it, because I never use them...it seems the tobacco dries out faster than leaving it out in the sun! But my other pet peeve is the fact that the leather is too 'puffy'. I don't like carrying around something that looks like a man purse...if you can re-create that bag but with a thick, stiff flat leather with all the magnetic buttons in that bag, I would buy two of them. Oh and make it BLACK. I hate brown bags...

I like the stapping, and the zippers, but the pouch has got to go.

I'll be interested to see what you come up with Stanwellman. That's because I'm always looking for the perfect day pouch. I've tried a few of those European man purses. Bit too fem for me. LOL. Guess I'm looking to carry three straights, an ounce of weed, Bic lighter, three in one tool, and cleaners. Looking for thick unstained natural leather. Zippered.

This is like trying to build the better mouse trap
I have several pouches that seem to do the job but if someone came up with a better idea, I'd would certainly give it a try

Gents, thank you all for your responses and suggestions. Most of them sound like the ones I have been trying to fit into the design and make it workable.

“a case that could hold one round or square 50gm tin” sounds like a good idea but a rigid container adds to bulk of the case, which I am trying to avoid... . Since this is a day pouch only, a good quality leather pouch will hold the baccy in good shape for sure.

“my other pet peeve is the fact that the leather is too 'puffy” – none of that will be happening here. The leather for this project is 3.5 oz vegetable tanned cow hide in its natural light brown color, which in the end will be tooled and stained to accentuate the design......

“Looking for thick unstained natural leather. Zippered” – I am trying to avoid zippers, looking instead for other forms of closure....

“This is like trying to build the better mouse trap” – it certainly is, like reinventing the wheel, and I have been down this road a number of times and have not reached the ultimate destination yet... 

Well, this is a project in the works and considering your valuable input, I will let you all know how it ends. Until then, thanks again and stay tuned..... .

I have a overnight 2 pipe bag that seems to work well for me. Its a Savoy brand version. Has a pouch that is held in by small strong magnets and is removable. It also has room for lighters, tampers, pipe cleaners, etc. I do use the pouch, but put the tobacco in a small zip lock baggie.

Yeah, I have to admit I've held off due to the man purse thing. Right now I just use a pipe sock and a tin of tobacco. I wouldn't mind something that was like a small zippered day planner or CD book, but then you get into bulkiness.
Most my pipes are 3/4 bents and I always wonder how well they'd fit. Most of the bags seem designed for straights.
I'd love to see what you come up with.

I still haven't hit the "perfect" case for me, despite having three cases.
I use a single, fold over pipe/tobacco pouch for walking around and it fits in my pocket nicely. But it is just for overnight or day use.
I have a small Erlich leather 4-pipe case, but it is on the small side and won't hold any tobacco. I travel with it on extended trips, but need to carry the tobacco in a separate bag. It does have a small zipper pouch for a lighter and some cleaners.

I have a beautiful six-pipe Smokin'Holsters bag, but it's too big sometimes. It does hold six to eight pipes and a ton of tobacco. But, it's a bit much for vacations, etc.

I actually tried to come up with a design myself, but without much success. I was thinking of a somewhat loose "holster" type rig, belt mounted, with a large pocket for a round tin, and a pipe pocket on the front with room for a pipe tool and about 10 pipe cleaners. I never really figured out what it would look like, and what material would be used tho.
