Looking at the OP's pipe photo it is burning near the bottom of the pipe which usually a newby could not get a lot of heat down there?

Possibly this pipe has a fault in the briar and not anything to do with the smoking method?

The op’s photo looks like it’s just moisture. I would like to see another pic when the pipe has had at least 24 hours to rest.

I've been smoking on and off for forty years, and I have never experienced a burnout, and for a long while I had only several pipes, so this isn't something that happens often. Usually it happens to those who smoke too hard, puff up a storm, which is not the best way to get flavor. Any pipe could burn out, but it is more likely with less expensive pipes where the briar isn't inspected or selected with much care ... even so it's rare. Break you pipe in gently, sip when you smoke, and burnout is unlikely.

This is my response on the articles.
Hi Kevin,
I checked with everyone here and no one remembers that particular piece. If it was a newsletter intro, sent by email, it's gone. Those are throwaway pieces--we don't archive them. Wish I could be more help.
Best regards,
Chuck
Oh well...it was worth a shot.
