I just finished a bowl in one of my favorite pipes and when I dumped the ash I noticed something. There was a spot where it looked like the wall of the chamber was eroding. First time I have had a pipe start to do this and I am just not sure where to go with it from here. I have heard of a few ways of fixing/stopping burn out such as pipe mud, meerschaum dust, plaster of paris.
This is what it looks like. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi penguin. That looks like a Peterson Donegal Rocky. It's hard to tell from photos, but it's probably just a chunk of carbon cake that broke away from the wall. Maybe the pipe mud thing will work, but if it's really burned through, Peterson might replace it. Message Chuckw on this site for advice regards Peterson fixes and company dealings.

OK, after answering your PM, I see the picture. A piece of cake has fallen away from the side of the bowl. As I suggested in my PM, ream the cake back to make it even and and start over.

@Chuckw, do you happen to know if Peterson would replace burned-out pipes? I've heard ancedotal accounts that some companies do, especially because side-bowl burnouts would most likely be due to wood defects like soft spots, small knots, voids, etc., that lie just below the surface.

It depends on the age of the pipe. Obviously, if I burned burned one of my Pre-Republic pipes, they wouldn't replace it. If however it was a pipe that had an obvious defect, they would.

An aquaintence of mine in Bakersfield, Ca. had a stem split along a defect line that wasn't obvious until after the thing broke. He contacted Anglea Fortune at Peterson's, returned the pipe to them and was given a new pipe that was better than the one he sent back. Mrs. Fortune, Tony Whelan (factory manager)and Tom Palmer(CEO)care about their customers and do whatever is right to keep them.

I myself had quite a nice experience with their customer service. I sent copies of the catalogs I had scanned in to Angela and in return she sent me a 2010 un-numbered POY.

Yay! I was hoping that I had caught it before it became a big problem. Now I just have to use a reamer for the first time... *gulp*. Luckily I have a nice pipe shop near by that sells the senior pipe reamer and can hopefully show me how to use it right.

Hey guys, I think I have a more serious problem. My Peterson Great Explorers - Amundsen has suffered a major burnout, from the first smoke. My problem is that it actually is a replacement pipe. And unlike some of you here, my experience with Peterson customer care is not that positive. When I sent them back my burnout Amundsen (also from the second or third smoke - and I did everything by the book, meaning carefully breaking it in and so forth) they misplaced my package. After four months waiting for any news from them I wrote them a letter asking what's going on, and they replied they don't have my case on record but "they do remember receiving that sort of pipe just about at that time of a year (December 2010)" :)) So they told me they'll send me a replacement Amundsen. When I got my replacement I wasn't happy at all. It looked like and felt like a cheap Chinese imitation with visible flaws. It wasn't smooth at all, plus I even doubt the ring was real sterling silver. No wonder it burned through immediately. I have double thoughts if I should send it back, again. I'm tempted just to send the thing back to them as a gesture of indignation, without asking for replacement, I'm that much disappointed! Plus I tried fixing it (yesterday) by coating the interior of the bowl with a fine white clay, however I'm not satisfied with the result. Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Could be using this pipe too often during the day. Try alternating between 2 or 3 pipes during the day. Works for me, lowers the maintenance and increases longevity of your pipes. Just a suggestion.... :puffy:

I just used pipe mud on a major burn out in one of my pipes, applied smoothly, waited 2 days, now after several smokes, I've smoothed it and you can barely tell anything ever happened, smokes great and no hot spot.

I just recently noticed a few small cracks in the layer of whatever coats the bowl in a new Savinelli pipe that I bought a month ago. I don't have the reciept anymore either. What can be done about the small cracks before burnout becomes a serious problem? I wrote one person locally but I want to hear a few other opinions. Is it an expensive fix?

If it's just the cake or the precarb layer, there's nothing to worry about. Or is it a burnout?

This is so strange to hear I have been smoking a pipe regularily since 1995 and of all my pipes have yet to have one burn out or show a serious flaw. I guess I have been extremely lucky. Sorry to hear about everyones negative experiances.

I have heard that the fireplace cement stuff you get from Lowes or Home Depot works great. I haven't use it yet but I plan on it to fix a pipe here soon.

I have a Brigham Voyaguer 103 I vought it Jan 17 2013 I smoked maybe 12 bowls in it and it has a burnout in the side of the bowl about 2/3 of the way up from the vent and continuing over to one side. I already called Brigham and talked to someone there. I just need to send it in, I keep forgetting :( I hope they would replace it rather than fix it.
