I don't worry too much, but simply the spout overflows into the pan, plus the bottom is sometimes poorly finished, with reliefs. This makes the air flow a bit clumsy. But I repeat, these are imperfections that come in some pipes and not in others. Corn pipes give a very satisfying smoke. They are a great friend for the smoker. I imagine that there are briar pipes of x brands that must give fantastic smokes, but I don't have any experience with it. I've only tried Peterson, and I've only been trying it for a month. I still have a long way to go with briar pipes and their qualities.
What model Peterson did you obtain? Congratulations. :)

I have 4 Petersons. My 408 came with the new bowl coating that many complain about. I smoked two half bowls and one full. The cake had already started building. The first bowl or two of 1Q tasted a little different than normal. But I expect that whether the bowl is coated or bare briar.

I think that some folks smoke so many types of tobaccos in a pipe without cleaning the bowl properly that the cake that has built up from all of the different types can muddle up the taste of a pipe.

Hello friend Alabama. Yes, well, it was a gift from a fellow forum member. I think it is a Peterson » System Standard Sandblasted (XL315) P-Lip. I still have to give a little cake to its walls, as it still gives me a bitter taste, smokes well, the airflow is fine. But I have to keep trying more smokes and be able to evaluate. Aesthetically I love them, their price is very attractive, but I don't know the quality and aging of their briars. There are many fellow Peterson smokers here, and they can help a lot to clear up my doubts and those of other friends on the forum.

Never had a breaking in problem with the pipes JM Boswell puts a special coating in his pipes and they are just fine I guess it's all subjective.

As others have said, I think that if you just smoke it a bit more it will get better. For me, the breaking-in period is the worst, since it hasn't reached its highest potential yet if you get what I mean. After a while, everything should start to click. I don't know but I guess that it is the tars and grime that fill up every small crevice so the material doesn't soak up the tastes? No idea, just speculating but for me, no pipe, regardless of material, tastes very well until at least 5 smokes, sometimes a lot more? So I say, just smoke it 30 more times, if you feel like you have the time for it. If it tastes like shit then just toss it, it's probably cursed.

I have one Peterson. A 20S deluxe and I love it. Great fit and finish and I cannot wait to buy another. Having said that, the bowl coating, like some others have found, was horrible. Gunky and nasty. Some hot water and a paper towel took care of it. I can hardly set it down now.

I also purchased a new Peterson Army Filter Heritage (150) Fishtail (9mm) last year, so it has the newer bowl coating.
(on August 17th, I had to look this up)
I never touched the coating - just left it in place, and fortunately I never experienced a problem. This Pete 150 is one of my workhorse smokers. I've had great use from all my Peterson pipes, so far. (I have 4 or 5)

I hope you get this resolved and claim many years of enjoyment from that pipe.
